Sophie (Guz) Slanchik, 92, of Weirton, West Virginia, passed away Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Weirton Geriatric Center with her family at her side. Sophie was born on July 13, 1925, in Weirton, West Virginia, daughter of the late Thomas and Marianne Guz. Sophie was preceded in death by brothers John, Andy, Chester, Frank and infant brother Edward Guz, sisters Eleanor Flowers, Virginia Najdecki. Jenny Dobies and Ann Salanci. Sophie worked at Weirton Steel for six years as a Tin Plate Inspector until her marriage. Sophie was a perfect example of a selfless, hardworking woman. She got her drivers license and learned to play golf in her sixties. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, George, but her greatest joy was being “Grandma Sophie” to her six grandsons. She was a member of Saint Paul Church in Weirton. Sophie is survived by her husband George P. Slanchik who she married July 1, 1950; sons George (Joanne) Slanchik and Frank (Susan) Slanchik; daughter Maryann (Bill) Marino; grandsons Robert and George Slanchik, Bryan (Erin) Slanchik, Justin Slanchik, Bill Marino and Doug (Marisa) Marino; great grandson George (Geno) Slanchik; great granddaughter Adaline Marino and sisters Mary Roberts and Julie Nogay. Friends will be received on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Friday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Father Babu Joseph Elamturuthil will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery, Weirton. Sophies family would like to thank Dr. Makar and his staff for the excellent care and friendship they’ve shown Sophie for the past 45 years and also the Weirton Geriatric Center for the wonderful care and compassion they’ve given Sophie, especially the second floor staff. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton, WV 26062 or Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943.
