william konchar
William Sava Konchar, the second-born child of George and Ruby (n. Tingler) Konchar, came into the world January 27, 1948, under a waning gibbous moon. Will was a mischievous child, curious and bright. He liked to understand how things worked, which meant taking them apart… but not necessarily putting them back together. Despite the general bickering that comes with being one of four children, Will was close with his siblings. He was competitive, impulsive, and accident prone; yet, fiercely loyal to family. When Will left home for Marshall University, his absence left a quiet void in a household used to loud and lively debate. He wanted to be a teacher, to share his love of American history and world events. Will joined a fraternity, studied hard, enjoyed college life, and fell in love with Rachael Glenna Fatherly. That was the end of school, although he would eventually continue his education. Will and Rachael married April 3, 1971. They worked to create their dream life. Will took a job at Weirton Steel, working his way to foreman before retiring. He built a house near his parents and improved the property as the years passed. He loved yardwork, as evidenced by a perpetual dark tan. Within a few years, Will started a family; first, son George Matthew Konchar and then daughter Michelle Dawn Beal. He watched as his children grew to adulthood, embracing Daughter-in-law Cindy (n. Allison) and Son-in-law Jeremie. Will welcomed grandchildren into his expanding world; he showed them what it means to work hard, stay strong, and love with your whole heart. Logan, Mason, Boden, Josie and Crosbie had their Pappy’s support for everything from extracurricular activities to homework. He showed the boys how to chop wood, hosted family bonfires, and doled out bone-crushing hugs. Will had boundless energy. He stayed fit through bodybuilding, tinkered with his Harley, and devoted countless hours to his backyard driving range and par-3 course. He watched his beloved Minnesota Vikings aspire to four championship games while everyone else twirled their Terrible Towels. He read Herbert, Clarke, Asimov, and Gibson when Sci-Fi was in its infancy, and admired the fantasy artwork of Boris Vallejo. Will discovered video cameras in the age of VHS; from then on, no family event went unrecorded. Although Will could be a formidable protagonist in a debate, he was our rock in a crisis, gave thoughtful counsel, and never let a difference of opinion cloud his compassion. Will lost Rachael to cancer on December 10, 2016. He succumbed to the rare Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease on June 14, 2018. Friends will be received on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 am. Pastor Kara Rowe will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery, Weirton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation Inc.
