brenda hickey

We are saddened to announce the death of Brenda Hickey of Weirton who passed away at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville on Saturday, December 16, 2023. She was sixty-five years old.

Aunt Sissy as she was known to many, was born in Steubenville on August 22, 1958, she was a daughter to Thomas Hickey and Lois Smurthwaite Dick and stepfather, William Dick.

Sissy was a 1976 graduate of Weir High School who was granted a scholarship to attend West Liberty College to play softball for the Hilltoppers.

Her family describes her as the sweetest soul to walk on the earth, giving you the shirt off her back and the last dollar in her pocket. She was also known for giving the best hugs and was never afraid to tell you how much she loved you in the same breath.

After attending college, Sissy dedicated forty-two-plus years as a grocery clerk to the Kroger Organization in Steubenville.

She was known by so many people throughout the city, making stops to see her friends at the Irish Pub, the Oasis, Mugshots, and the former Gold’s Club.

Sissy’s strong faith in God gave her the strength to conquer many obstacles. She was a twenty-three-year survivor of breast cancer and fought her current fight with so many prayer warriors behind the scenes helping her to be at rest and allowing her faith to be her beacon.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, and brothers Kevin and Thomas Hickey.

Left to cherish her memory with complete love and admiration are her partner of over 33 years, Karyn Kovach, brother Donnie (Lisa) Hickey all of Weirton, Melinda (Rick) Hart of Spring, TX, Dyane (Amy Jones) Dick of Pittsburgh, and Amy’s daughter Kattie Jones, nieces Jessica Hart and son Jaxon, Joanna (Randy) Blythe and children Riley, Wade, and Casey, nephew Brice (Kameron) Hickey and niece Danielle Hickey and her son Christopher, additionally she is survived by her “Bonus Family,”

  8. Melinda, Donnie, Dyane, and Karen, (and your respective families), my deepest condolences. Sissy was a great neighbor and an even better friend! She was like family. She used to babysit my kids back in the day. We all loved her!! Sissy was one of the kindest, funniest, most thoughtful persons I’ve ever known. I am proud to have called her my friend. To say she’ll be missed is an understatement!! Thank God for all the wonderful, memories over the years of her lifetime. Anyone who knew Sissy had to love her. She was just that kind of person. God must have needed another angel, I guess. She’s gone too soon, but I guess He needed her more. It’s a blessing that she’s not suffering anymore.
She’s probably having a high old time up there with Tommy, her mom and Bill and everyone. We’ll see her again when our time here is over. In the meantime, I, for one, will remember her and smile because she was my friend. Love you Sissy! ❤️ Be good up there!!
