Nora Mae Hatcher Coleman, 82, of Weirton, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Born on May 23, 1943, in Beckley, WV, Nora was the daughter of the late Arthur and Noralueva Moore Hatcher.

After graduating from Byrd Prillerman High School in Amigo, WV, Nora furthered her education at Bluefield State College. It was there she met the love of her life, Melvin L. “Mel” Coleman. The two were married on December 27, 1962, and shared nearly 58 years together before his passing in 2020. Following Mel’s career as a semi-pro basketball player, he became a teacher and assistant basketball coach at Weirton Madonna High School. As her children grew, Nora began a long and fulfilling career beginning at First National Bank of Weirton, followed by Weirton Housing Authority and presently as the Activity Director at Serra Village in Weirton, where she served for more than twenty years.

Nora was known for her joyful spirit, feisty nature, and vibrant personality. She was the life of the party, always impeccably dressed and full of energy. She loved decorating her home, singing, and taking vacations with her family, especially the annual Coleman family trips to the Outer Banks.

For forty years, she played an integral role in the Coleman School of Basketball.

She was a faithful parishioner of Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir and was active in the Christian Mothers. Nora also dedicated her time to community service through the Democratic Women, the Human Rights Commission, and as a former member of the Weirton Jaycees.

In addition to her parents, Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Lawrence Coleman, Sr., who passed on July 1, 2020, and her grandson, Adrian.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Melvin Lawrence Coleman, Jr. (Lori), Patrick Jerome Coleman (Jody), Anthony Norville Coleman (Alana), Melissa Coleman, Kenyatta Coleman-Grant (Derrick), and LaTasha R. Coleman; her grandchildren: LaChelle Guinn, Mariah, Antuan, and Amiya Coleman, Madison and Micah Brotosky, Melvyn Elijah Coleman, Savannah, Victor, and Kenleigh Grant; her great-grandchildren: Carson Francis, Yuri, and Kai Jones; and her brothers: Richard Hatcher (Dorothy), Arthur Hatcher (Ruby), and Roy Hatcher (Bronza).

Friends and family will be received on Sunday from 1–3 PM and 6–8 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday (Labor Day), at Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Weirton.

  5. Candle Selection 2To the Coleman family: I am so sorry to hear about your mom’s/grandma’s passing. She as well as your dad/grandpa, was a great person, always so full of joy and life. They both made huge impressions on so many people especially kids. God bless you during this difficult unexpected time.

  6. Candle Selection 2My deepest sympathies to all the Coleman families! I have to tell a short story about your mom at the Madonna gym for some kind of function and one of you girls, Kenyatta or Latasha, was running up and down the bleachers, being very disruptive. Your mom, ever so calmly said “ Kenyatta/Latasha, be a lady”. And immediately you settled down! I thought to myself that that was the kind of mom I wanted to be. Your parents were role models to more people than you’ll ever know! God bless you all, Cathy (Mueller) Arango , Madonna Class of ‘72

  10. Candle Selection 2I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Nora personally, but through the beautiful stories Tasha has shared—and knowing the kind of person her daughter is—it’s clear she was a remarkable woman. Her love and spirit will always live on through her family. My heart is with you all.

  11. To the entire Coleman Family, My heart is breaking over the loss of your beautiful mother. I am sending love, prayers, and hugs from afar and wish I could be there to celebrate her life with all of you. Both of your parents have left a lasting impression on my soul and I am so grateful to have known them. Keeping you all in my prayers. Love you all, Stephanie

  12. Candle Selection 4To the Coleman family – I was heartbroken to hear of your moms passing. Your mom was one special lady. She always greeted me, gave me a hug and a smile. She ywas so kind to so many people and your dad was the same way. Your dad was one of my favorite teachers, friend and a wonderful man. Even when he was in a parade – he would have them stop the car so we could hug and share a quick message to each other. They were both so absolutely wonderful. Our world was changed for the better with their presence. God Bless all of you in this time of sadness. I’m sure he is smiling to have her with him in heaven. My prayers are with you all.
Susan Long Nolan (MHS class of 1972)

She will always be remember as a precious gem of a person!

  14. A wonderful lady who showed us what class was and how to have fun. Always thoughtful, wise, and kind. We were all blessed to have her touch our lives.

  15. Nora was such a sweet and lovely lady…last September I had the pleasure of being in her company as she was an honored guest at our Madonna class reunion. She always had a kind word and we always found something to chuckle about. She will truly be missed in our community.

  16. Candle Selection 2To the Family of My Beloved Sister Nora,
She will be deeply missed. I often think back to our childhood days. She was scared of worms, and Arthur and I would gather green worms from the tobacco leaves to chase her. We would laugh until Mama yelled at us to stop. Those were simple times, and we were like a close-knit family. We truly loved one another, and I will always remember her.
To my dear Coleman family, hold your mother’s name high and let God guide you. She is now at peace in God’s arms. Stay strong; I love you. I regret that I can’t be with you in person, but I will be there in spirit. Let’s keep each other in prayer.

  17. Candle Selection 1We were profoundly saddened to learn of Aunt Nora’s unexpected passing. She had a remarkable ability to bring joy and laughter into our lives, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her vibrant spirit and infectious smile created cherished memories that will forever warm our hearts. In this difficult time, we find comfort in the love she shared and the lessons she imparted, knowing that her light will continue to shine through the stories we share. Aunt Nora’s spirit will always remain with us, reflected in the beautiful moments we were blessed enough to experience together. Aunt Nora, rise in Love, Light and Power! With warmth and affection from your nieces and nephew, Kecia, Nicole, and Richard Jr.
