Myrtle Estella Szuch passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, with her family by her side at WVU-WMC.
Born on June 27, 1937, in Follansbee, Myrtle was a beloved daughter of Floyd and Vivian Clear Glasure. A graduate of Follansbee High School, class of 1954, she devoted many years to her career as an operator for C&P Telephone.
On November 16, 1957, Myrtle united in marriage with her soulmate, Joe A Szuch. Together, they built a life marked by sixty-four years filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures. Their commitment to the community was evident through their active membership in the New Manchester Grange and participation in the Fun Seekers.
Myrtle’s life as a mother was characterized by unwavering devotion; she actively engaged with her children’s PTA, formed lasting friendships through her love of bowling, golf, and card club, and supported her children and grandchildren in all their endeavors, whether it was their sports, dance, or weekend roller skating. Her deep faith truly defined her, and she was a cherished member of The New Manchester Fairview Presbyterian Church.
In her quiet time helping individuals, she had assisted a family who had been living out of their car, providing hot meals, snacks, and drinks, frequently offering them a place to shower and respite from the elements.
Myrtle was a volunteer, contributing her time to the Hancock County Children’s Home, quite often taking her children, Joe, and Debra, along with her.
Our mother never had a mean word to say about anyone. She would always say to us, “Always smile and be kind, you don’t know what the other person has going on in their life.”
She was our #1 fan!
When she wasn’t doing for others, you could find her reading a book, the house could burn down around her, and she would never know.
In addition to her parents, Myrtle is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe, grandson Michael Ryan Stevens, sisters Josephine Richards, Donna Lowther, Barbara Ballato, Linnie Biondillo, and brother Sonny Glasure.
She leaves behind a loving legacy, including her daughter Debra (Joe) Hartman of Colliers, her son Joe Szuch and his fiancé Becky of New Manchester, and a host of grandchildren: Christina, Drew, Brittany, Joie, and Victoria, great-grandchildren Levi, Caitlyn, John, Rylee, Chloe, Rowan, Kaydence, Destini, Kiersten, Kandace, Kameron, and great-great-grandson Kase. She will be especially missed by her bonus grandchildren, Krista, Candice, and Dustin, who were long-time family friends she held close to her heart, as well as her bonus great-grandchildren, Xander and Ryder, her sister Geraldine DiCiccio and brother Donald (Sheila)Glasure, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Myrtle’s request for cremation will be honored.
She will be cremated at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home Crematory, Weirton, WV.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
