Born in:
Weirton , WV
Resided in:
Chesapeake, VA
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jean Thomas, formerly of Weirton, who left us suddenly on April 5, 2026, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Born on November 2, 1936, in Weirton, Mary was the only daughter of John and Anna Hrin Evancho.
Mary lived a life steeped in faith, gracefully nurturing her spiritual journey for many years at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.
She was known not only for her deep beliefs but also for her ability to bring humor into the lives of those around her. Her son Richard fondly recalls her sharp wit and dry sense of humor, which he proudly acknowledges as the source of the cynicism he inherited from her. “She was a super cool mom,” whose laughter and clever comebacks will echo in Richard’s heart forever.
A dedicated homemaker, Mary, also contributed her talents to the community, working at Madonna High School and the local Social Security Office, offering her kindness and service to others.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Richard Norman Thomas, who sadly passed away on May 7, 2011, and her brother John Evancho.
Mary is survived by her beloved son, Dr. Richard (Anessia), Thomas of Chesapeake, VA, and her grandsons, Ian Thomas and Parker Thomas, and by her devoted friend, Mike Amendolare.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit Mary’s family on Monday, April 13, from 9:00 to 10:30 am at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV.
An 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton.
Fr. Binu Sebastian will preside.
Entombment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Paul’s School or Church, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton, WV 26062, or to your local Animal Shelter.
