lucille colliers

Lucille Fernandez Colliers, 100, of Weirton, WV, passed away peacefully at her home on May 28, 2026.

The matriarch of her family, Lucille, was a pillar of wisdom, strength, love, and guidance to all who knew her. Born on December 14, 1925, in Union, South Carolina, she was one of twelve children born to the late Henry and Sillar Jeter Pendergrass, Sr.

Lucille devoted her life to caring for her family. A loving homemaker, she took great pride in her home and especially enjoyed cooking and washing clothes, which she continued to do up until March of this year. For 17 years, she worked in the housekeeping department at Weirton Medical Center, prior to undergoing quintuple bypass surgery more than twenty years ago, Lucille will long be remembered for her kind heart, independent spirit, and unconditional love for others. She loved everybody, was well liked by all who met her, and possessed a remarkable ability to listen and offer wisdom. As a strong and determined woman, she successfully raised six children on her own while teaching them the importance of education, responsibility, and perseverance.

Her family was the center of her world. She never missed a child’s school event or a grandchild’s sporting event and found her greatest joy when her grandchildren and their friends gathered at her home. She always wanted to know what was happening in the lives of those she loved and was never afraid to lovingly set someone straight if she believed they had gotten off track.

In her free time, Lucille enjoyed shopping, visiting flea markets, and traveling. She especially enjoyed trips to Canada and Las Vegas. Independent to the very end, she continued driving well into her nineties.
In addition to her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence Fernandez; her daughters, Mary Fernandez Smith and Michelle Colliers Bridges; her granddaughter, Brandy Bridges; her brothers, William “Bill,” Robert, Henry “Jr.,” and Hugh Pendergrass; and her sisters, Anna Mae Spencer, Hazel Dawkins, and Mabel Stevens.

She will be remembered with love and admiration by her sons, Larry and Lawrence Fernandez; her daughters, Dorrina Colliers and Benita Birden; her brothers, Paul, James and Richard Pendergrass; her sister, Dorothy Lee; her thirteen grandchildren, Erran Fernandez (Andre) Smith, Troy (Briana) and Tiffany Fernandez, Terrence (Diane) and Travis (Tanika) Smith, Tara (Godfred) Gordon, Tamekia (Clayton) Smith, Brandon and Sedede Colliers, Precious Barnett, Gary Roseberry, Jaymie and Julius Johnson, along with 15 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Friends and family will gather to celebrate Lucille’s life on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 10:00 AM until the time of services at 12:00 Noon at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home.

Her grandson Terrence will preside over the services.
