Byron �Sam� L. Messer, 79, of Weirton, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at his home. Born January 1, 1932 in Montgomery, WV, he was a son of the late Russell and Lena E. Alexander Messer. He was also preceded in death by his wife Josephine David Messer and great-granddaughter JoDee Messer. In 1987, Mr. Messer retired from Weirton Steel. He also worked on cars and helped Bill Blake in New Cumberland with body work. He was a member of the Weirton Salvation Army, WSX 25-Year Club and the New Manchester Senior Citizens and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Byron is survived by his daughters Linda Hurley of Weirton, Lorraine Messer and Diane McKenney and her husband Larry all of Jacksonville, NC; brother Kelly Messer of Weirton; grandchildren Eric Marshall, Timothy Hurley and Bridget Harrison and 3 great-grandchildren Landon Hurley, Ryland Hurley and Reagan Marshall. He also leaves behind his best friend, a Jack Russell terrier named Jack. Mr. Messer�s family wants to take the opportunity to thank their family and friends for all they have done to support Byron. Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Additional visitation will be 9;00 AM until time of services at 10 AM Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene 475 Colliers Way Weirton, WV . The Reverend Larry Barkley will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Weirton Salvation Army, P. O. Box 2499, Weirton, WV 26062.
