Chester P. Grossi, 85, of Weirton, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2008, in Acuity Specialty Hospital at Steubenville, OH. Chester was born on June 7, 1922, in San Valentino, Province of Chieti, Italy, a son of the late Valentino and Maria Posato Grossi. He was also preceded in death by his daughter in law Lisa. Chester graduated from Weir High School in 1940. He was employed by the Weirton Steel Corporation, until he entered the US Air Force as a cadet, later becoming a B-29 Flight Engineer. Upon his discharge from the Air Force in 1945, he entered West Liberty State College and obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Physical Education. He then earned his Master's Degree in Health/Physical Education/ Recreation and Secondary Education Administration from West Virginia University. He was a teacher and coach at Weir High School for 14 years before going into the Investment and Insurance business, representing Waddell and Reed Inc., as a Divisional Manager for 21 years. He then became a Divisional Manager for Offerman & Co., Inc. until his retirement. Chester was inducted into the West Liberty Sports Hall of Fame, where he played football for the late Coach Joseph Bartell. He was past president of the WV-OH Basketball and Football Officials Association. He officiated football and basketball games in the OVAC, and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Conference as a member of the Ohio Valley Football Board and West Virginia-Ohio Basketball Officials Association for 45 years until his retirement in 1988. Chester was a member of St Paul Roman Catholic Church, the church's financial committee, and the Holy Name Society where he was past president. He served as co-chairman of the building of the new St. Paul's Church and it's renovation in 1997. Chester was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3734 and the Fourth Degree Assembly and was Past Grand Knight. He served on the finance committee for the Weirton Chapter of Camp Fire, Inc., and was a director on the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Festival Board, representing Hancock County and the Weirtonian Lodge. Chester was President of the Weirtonian Lodge #183, Order Italian Sons and Daughters of America and was on the Board of Directors of the ISDA Association. He was chairman of the Scholarship Committee of the Weirtonian Lodge. He was a member of the American Legion Post 10, Weirtron Elks, and United Way Inc. He was a life member of the National Education Association, the West Virginia Education Association, the Alumni Associations of West Liberty State College, the Alumni Association of West Virginia University and was also active in the West Liberty State College Hilltoppers Club. Chester was President of the W. Va. Safety and Driver's Education Association and was on the President's Council on Driver Education and Safety. He is survived by his wife Rose Paluch Grossi; his son Thomas; his daughter Monica all of Weirton; his brothers Dan P. and Delores Grossi, John T. and Irene Grossi all of Weirton; and his sisters, Louise C. and Larry Enrietti of Weirton, Lena Schiavone of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Kathryn and Thomas A. Grossi. . Visitation will be 6-8 PM Tuesday, and 2-8 PM Wednesday at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St, Weirton, WV, where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening at 6 PM. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Thursday at St Paul Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St Paul Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by the American Legion Firing Squad.   2. To the entire Grossi family, I am sorry to hear of your loss. I have lost a great friend and mentor. He was my first coach as i played basketball for him while in 5th grade. Played 3 years. Then he was my football coach for my freshman and soph year in High School. I also had him for History. Then he was my mentor in basketball officiating. He was a great teacher in all. He also is the last assistant coach of my fathers to pass. I will always treasure our good times together and so glad he made the Ohio Valley Hall of Fame with my Dad. He deserved it . To all of you from my brother Carl and me our heartfelt sympathy. Weirton will sure miss him. His trip to Fl and my hotel where I worked was a good time . When we had our fire 2 years ago he was responsible for taking up a very much needed collection from the neighborhood. We will never forget his generosity and thoughtfulness.
