david waggoner
David “John” Waggoner, Jr. of Weirton, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021. He was 72. John, as he was known to family and friends, was born on October 29, 1948, in Steubenville, OH the first of two children born to David J. and Jane Davidson Waggoner, Sr. John graduated from Weir High School in 1967, where he played trumpet and tuba in the Weir High Band. A car enthusiast, one of John’s highlights of high school is when he traveled with the band to perform at the Indianapolis 500. After high school, John attended the West Liberty Branch College in Weirton before joining Weirton Steel. In 1969 he married his first wife and together they were blessed with two children. John retired after a thirty-plus-year career with Weirton Steel, where he worked as an operator in the tin mill. He was also known as a skilled auto mechanic, and there was always a Volkswagen or a friend’s car parked in his driveway waiting to be repaired. On December 14, 1985, John married Patricia Julio and quickly became Patty’s rock. They were blessed with over 35 years of marriage, where they enjoyed countless “Adventures of Waggs”. You never knew what was coming next when you were with John. John loved coaching his kids at the Weirton Baseball Association, teaching them to race canoe’s at Beaver Creek State Park, and passing on his love for automobiles. A diehard Pittsburgh Pirate fan, John loved to watch the pirates on TV. He also enjoyed watching Gunsmoke, camping, and toying around in his 1952 replica M.G. In his later years, he enjoyed gardening and sharing his crops with his family and friends. A talented woodworker, he could build a pergola, a swing, or the tiniest details of a model ship. Most of all, John will be remembered for his unique personality, a one of a kind, who cared for his wife, kids, and family. He would do anything he could for them. John was an active member of the Weirton First Church of the Nazarene, where he was a Sunday School Teacher and a member of J.O.Y. He was also a member of the Weirton Steel 25 Year Club. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his niece, Christy Myers. He will be remembered with love by his wife, Patricia Julio Waggoner; his son, Eric and Paula Waggoner; his daughters, Jenny and Michael Hodges; Crystal and Rian Lane and Amanda Toma; his sister, Judy Myers (Mike Volosin); and his five grandchildren, Matthew and Cody Waggoner, Jacob and Taylor Lane and Regan Temple; and his niece, Juliana (Adam) Riley. Visitation will be Tuesday 3 PM until the time of funeral services at 6:30 PM at the Weirton First Church of the Nazarene 475 Colliers Way Weirton. 6. My first memory of John goes back to June 1967. I had graduated from Wellsville on Monday and came to Weirton to see John graduate the next night. We would cross paths a few times over the years and then I bought a car from Eric in 2007, not realizing who his Dad was till I asked him. As the Waggoner / Knight reunion got started John and Patty stepped up to help out as I retired and moved to Wisconsin. John was one of the “good guys”. He will be missed by those of us left from our generation. Rest in peace. Wilbur “Rip” Waggoner
