Dorothy Garan, 90, of Weirton, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2020. A daughter of the late Nick and Mary Fritch Yashko, Dorothy, was born in Steubenville, OH on June 8, 1929. She was also preceded in death by her sister Veronica McCleery ; sister in law Sandy Yashko.; and brother in law, James McCleery. Dorothy was a tin flopper at Weirton Steel when she met her husband, George. The two were united in marriage on May 21, 1955. Shortly after marriage, Dorothy became a homemaker. She was a caring, loving, never-ending storyteller, best cook, and matriarch of her family. She will always be remembered for her great smile, distinct laugh, her family gatherings around her dining room table, and the love she had for praying the rosary every Sunday morning. She was a pillar of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church and a longtime and faithful member and past vice president of the Altar & Rosary Society. Dorothy will be remembered with love by her husband, George; daughters, Maureen (Jack) Dumbaugh, Cathleen (Mike) Mankosa, and Janet (Scott) Winwood, brother, Nick Yashko; sisters, Mary (Gene) Wheeler and Julie (Ed) Rice; grandchildren, Mari Dumbaugh, Julie (Steve) Romanin, Kristen, Michael and Nicholas Mankosa and Michelle and Eric Winwood. A parastas service will be held at 6 PM on Monday Friends and family will be received Monday 2:00 PM -4:00 PM and 6:30 PM -8:00 PM Monday at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV, Blessing services will be held at 9:30 am Tuesday in the funeral home, followed by the 10 am Funeral Liturgy at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church. Father Vasyl Symyon will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Paul Cemetery. In place of floral arrangements and gifts, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church Building Fund, 3116 Elm Street, Weirton, WV 26062. George and Maureen, so sad to read of your wife and mothers passing this morning. reading her obit brought back a flood of memories of happy times shared in Weirton with your family at St. Mary’s events, the Life of Christ Passion Play, Weir Jr & Sr High, and growing up in a town like Weirton. Dorothy and my grandmother Mary (Platt) Gogul as shared the experience of being co-worker in the Weirton Steel Tin Mill and the special bond that created among friends.
