george banketas
George J. Banketas,75, of Weirton, passed on Saturday, March 5, 2022. George was born in Steubenville, OH, on September 16, 1946, one of four children born to James and Mary Damiris Banketas. When George was in junior high school, his family moved to Florida. In 1964 he graduated from Dan McCarty High School in Fort Pierce, Florida. George continued his education at Indian River Community College, Florida Atlantic University, and Nova University. He was one thesis away from receiving his PhD. On June 10, 1967, he married his high school sweetheart, Iris Wisham. They were blessed with two sons in their nearly fifty-five years of marriage. George retired as an administrator with the Crisp County School System and moved to Georgia before locating back to the Weirton Area. George was an avid bowler. He bowled multiple 300 games and was named the assistant bowling coach at Florida State University. He also enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton, AF & AM Lodge 87, and the Professional Bowlers Association. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sister, Patty Freedman. He will be remembered with love by his wife, Iris Wisham Banketas; his two sons, James Banketas and George Banketas, II; his brother, Thomas Banketas; and his sister, Eleanor Schmidt. Friends and relatives will be received on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of funeral services at 11:00 AM at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Follansbee, WV. Memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church or the Weirton Christian Center.
