Harold "Sonny" Augustus Otey
October 23, 1929 ~ January 7, 2015
Harold "Sonny" Augustus Otey, 85, of Weirton, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2015. He was born October 23, 1929 in McKees Rocks, PA, a son of the late Robert Augustus and Ann (Dworzecki) Otey. He was also preceded in death by his sister Jeanne (Otey) Robinson.
A Roman Catholic by faith, he was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Weirton.
Sonny graduated from Weir High School in 1947, enlisted in the US Air Force in 1948 and served in the Korean War as a radioman on the B-29 Superfortress bomber. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Weirton.
After over 36 years of service, he retired as an operator in the Weirlite Mill at Weirton Steel. He was an avid bowler at the old Chestnut Bowling Lanes in Weirton and then an avid golfer at Woodview Golf Course in New Cumberland, WV
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen (Smogonovich) Otey, his sons Harold and Brian Otey; brother Charles "Butch" Otey; Godson and nephew Daniel Robinson and a number of nieces and nephews across the country.
Visitation will be held 5-9pm Friday at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church with the Reverend Father Manuel Gelido officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Steubenville, OH with military services being conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard.
