Irene K. Grossi, 78, of Weirton, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2009. She was born in Weirton, WV, to John and Teresa Olenick Yacos, Sr. on October 2, 1931. On July 25, 1953, she married John T. Grossi, and together they had five children. Irene retired as a Teacher's Aid for Hancock County Schools. But most of her married life, Irene was a homemaker, where she enjoyed baking, cooking and crocheting, while caring for her family. She was a member of the Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, ISDA Weirtonian Lodge, K of C Ladies Auxiliary, Hancock County Retired School Employees, an active reunion committee member for the Class of 49, and a former member of the Saint Mary's Altar Society. In addition to her parents, Irene was also preceded in death by a sister, Yelena Yacos in 1917, and a brother, Reverend John Yacos, Jr. in 1971. Irene is survived by her husband, John T. Grossi; her two sons, John Valentino (Karen) Grossi of Winston Salem, NC and Timothy (Michelle) Grossi of Fredericksburg, VA; her three daughters, Tanya (Robert) Musick of Morgantown, WV, Teresa Grossi of Bloomington, IN, and Valentina Grossi Bigalke of McKinney, TX; eight grandchildren, John Roby and Anna Grace Grossi, David and Michael Musick, Melanie Russ, Christopher Grossi, Emma and Ava Bigalke; two great grandchildren, Hadleigh and Brady Russ; a brother, William Yacos; two sisters, Mary Durham and Helen Eckersberg all of Weirton Visitation will be 6-8PM Wednesday and 1-3 & 6-8PM Thursday at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV. Funeral Liturgy with mass will be celebrated 11:30 am Friday at Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weirton. Interment will follow in Saint Paul Cemetery, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Morgantown, 841 Country Club Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505 or Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton, WV 26062.

  1. Just last week when our family buried our grandmother (May Zdinak Gogul) from St. Mary’s on Elm Street I saw the home where the Grossi’s lived. It brought back so many memories of bing in the Passion Play with members of the family. It was also my pleasure to know Irene and John during my days at St. Paul’s in the early 1990’s.   7. Irene was a loving, caring individual who never met a stranger. When I first met her, it was like we had known each other forever. And could she bake!! She always made sure to have my “special dessert” when we came in from Texas. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

  17. I never had the pleasure of meeting Irene (or John T., or any of the children other than John V., who is one of my very favorite people). Nevertheless, hearing many family stories from son John makes me feel as if I actually knew Irene, and knew her reasonably well, at that. Her passing is a great loss, made all the more difficult by its sudden, unexpected nature. My sincerest condolences to all the family; I hope all of you are doing as well as can be expected under these very trying circumstances.
