Irene Lengyel

Irene Lengyel, 100, of Weirton, WV, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2018, at her home with her loving family by her side. Born January 21, 1918, in Steubenville, OH, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Susan Lesko Furda. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Lengyel, on November 12, 1982; her four brothers, Bill, Mike, Dan and George Furda; and her sister, Margaret Bolock. Prior to starting her family, Irene worked for 13 years as a tin flopper at the Weirton Steel Corporation. Strong in her faith, Irene was a pillar of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, where she was active in the Ladies Altar Society and sang in the church choir. She volunteered many hours raising money for the church by baking nut rolls, and pastries, cooking perogies, cabbage rolls and soup. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bingo with her family and friends. Irene will be remembered with love by her children, Thomas (Cindy Will) Lengyel of Weirton and Gary Lengyel of Imperial, PA; Susan Pronchik (John) and Christine Greco (Sam), all of Colliers, WV; her grandchildren, Alexandra and Samantha Lengyel, Kristen and John M. Pronchik, and Ben (Lauren) Jones; her great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Kennen, and John A. Pronchik; and her faithful companions, Casper and Whiskers. The family would like to thank Irene’s nurses’ aides from the Brooke County Committee on Aging, Sherry and Sue, for their love and support, and Valley Hospice for their excellent care. Visitation will be 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm Tuesday, February 20th, at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, where Parastas services will be held at 7:30 pm. Additional visitation will be 10 am until time of Funeral Liturgy at 11 am Wednesday, February 21st, at Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, 604 Colliers Way, Weirton. Reverend Father Andrew P. Nelko will preside. Interment will follow in Saint Nicholas Cemetery, located within the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton.
