Irene May Smitsky, 83, of Burgettstown, PA, died Tuesday February 21, 2012, at the Weirton Geriatric Center. Born May 4, 1928, in Erie Mine, PA, Irene was a daughter of the late Charles and Delma Rowland Lawson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Carl Smitsky, Sr. on November 20, 2001; her brother, Charles Lawson, and her sister, Evelyn Lawson. Irene took care of her family. She loved bird watching and was an avid reader. She enjoyed her soap operas, and was a collector of owls, angels, and clown figurines. She was a member of the Tucker United Methodist Church. Irene is survived y her two sons, Michael and Veronica Smitsky of Weirton, WV, and Walter C. "Butch" and Rhonda Smitsky, of Burgettstown, PA; her daughter, Gwendolyn Ivanac of Burgettstown, PA; her two sisters, Connie and George Nemeth and Shirley Hadley all of Burgettstown, PA; her seven grandchildren, Tialisa Lynn Zaney, Walter C, Carl J, Kristen and Alicia Smitsky, Charles and Brandon Ivanac; her eight great-grandchildren, Taylor and Rhianna Zaney, Katelyn, Bailey, Drew, Brant, and Lilly Grace Smitsky, and Riley Romasco. Visitation will be 1-3 and 5-8 PM Thursday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton, where funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Friday. Pastor Kenn Jacobs will preside. Interment will follow at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Florence PA Memorial contributions may be made in Irene's memory to the Tucker United Methodist Church, 641 Steubenville Pike Burgettstown, PA 15021.

  2. I am so sorry to hear the loss of Irene. I went through elementary school and junior high with CJ, Chuchie, and Brandon. I saw Rhonda at a wedding a year or so ago. But I wanted to extend my deepest condolences to the family! She is in a much better place and will have the opportunity to watch over each and every one of her family members.
