James Bernard Byers, 89, of Weirton passed away on Friday January 24, 2020. A son of the late Robert A and Marie (McCardle) Byers, Sr., Jim was born in Weirton, WV, on August 29, 1930. In addition to his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert A. Byers, Jr. Jim graduated from Weir High School in 1949 and was a lifelong Weir Red Rider Fan. After high school he served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War. Following the war, he went to work for Weirton Steel and retired as an operator on the galvanized line from the sheet mill, after 40 years of service. Jim enjoyed attending Weir High and West Virginia University football games with his wife Dorothy and their friends and family. He also had the opportunity through the years to spend time golfing. He was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Weirton Steel 25 Year Club, American Legion Post 10 and Knights of Columbus. Jim will be remembered with love by his wife, Dorothy (Banda) Byers; sons, Brian and Cindy Byers of Cranberry, PA, and Robert “Bob” Byers of Long Beach, CA; daughter, Karen and Scott Freeman of Fullerton, CA; brother, William Byers of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Nicole, Nick, Alaina and Ross Byers, Brooke and Peter Freeman; sisters in law, Florence Rakich, June, Eileen and Lorena Banda; many special nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Sunday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Monday, at the Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Weirton. Rev. Fr. Anthony Thurston will preside. Interment will follow at the Serbian Cemetery in Weirton, with military services conducted by the West Virginia National Guard and the American Legion Post 10.   4. I was sorry to hear about Jim passing away. I worked with him on The Galvanized Line in The Sheet Mill (I was The Production Clerk). He was a GREAT guy to work with. I know my mom,Jeanette, and dad , Frankie truly were good friends and Dorothy, my mom thought the world of you too, I remember my dad always joking around with Mr.Byers . This sure rehashed some wonderful memories . I miss my mom and dad so much and would do anything to have them back, Mr . Byers is in heaven with the rest Of the ornery clan.
