James Joseph Velto, 87, of Weirton died Thursday September 20, 2012, at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH. Born on December 17, 1924, in Steubenville, OH, he was a son of the late Frank and Louise Zuccero Velto. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Natalie Marie Velto on June 30, 2011; and his two brothers, Frank and Patsy Velto. In his senior year of high school Mr. Velto enlisted in the United States Army and went off to fight in World War II, where he was a recipient of a Purple Heart. After the war he returned home to marry his bride and work for Weirton Steel for the next 35 Years, where he retired as a Systems Engineer from the Fuel Department in the Tin Mill. A very talented carpenter and painter, Mr. Velto enjoyed building and remodeling homes. His family and friends received the fruits of labors, as they are living in the homes that he built. When he was not working he could be found in his garden. He was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, a former member of Young Men's Organization in Steubenville, OH, and the Knights of Columbus 3734. He is survived by his three sons, James F. (Cathy) Velto, David (Leah) Velto, all of Weirton, WV and Michael (Cheri) Velto of Clinton, PA; a daughter, Beverly J. Velto of Weirton, WV; two sisters, Vera Talamonti of Steubenville, OH and Rose Kalinowski of West Mifflin, PA; eight grandchildren, Tracy (Keith) Fluharty, Nick (Michelle) Velto, Thomas (Rachel) Velto, Anna (Brad) Nicka, Katie, Emily, Sophia and Chloe Velto; one great grandchild on the way. Visitation will be 1-3 and 6-8 PM Sunday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Monday, at the Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church. Rev Manuel Gelido will preside. Interment will follow at Saint Paul Cemetery, Weirton, with military services conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard.
