James Wesley Bryan, 87, of New Cumberland, passed away Monday, November 11, 2019 at his home. He was born April 15, 1932 in East Liverpool, OH, a son of the late John S. and Sylvia DeBee Bryan, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his son Scott Bryan in 2002, brothers George and John S. Bryan, Jr. and sister Sarah Ramsey. A 1951 graduate of Weir High School, James played on the 1949 State Championship football team. Following high school, he served 4 years in the United States Air Force. In 1993, after 35 years of service, James retired from Weirton Steel, where he was a welder. He was a member of the former Fairview Presbyterian Church, AF & AM Weirton Lodge 171, Osiris Shrine of Wheeling, V.F.W. 109 in New Cumberland and the Chester American Legion Post 121. James loved to golf and would golf at area courses including Woodview and the former Pleasant Valley Country Club. He also enjoyed bowling in the WSX Leagues at Steel Valley Bowling Lanes. Around his home, he will always be remembered for his green thumb and his garden. He is survived by his wife Patricia Stephenson Bryan whom he met in high school and married April 23, 1958; sons J. W. (Amy) Bryan of New Cumberland and Jamie (Debbie) Bryan of Wheeling and grandchildren Tyler Bryan, Morgan Hoder, Corey Bryan and Catie Bryan and great granddaughter Bella Hoder. Friends will be received Thursday 4-8 pm at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV, where funeral services will be celebrated 11 am Friday. Reverend Greg Mead will officiate. Interment will follow in New Cumberland Cemetery where military services will be conducted by the US Air Force and American Legion Honor Guard.
