  8. Dear Ted, children, and grandchildren of Janet, My husband, mom, and I are saddened by the news we heard today. We had no idea Janet was ill. I knew her as a loving niece to Jenny and devoted mom and wife for many years, but I grew to know her much better when I had the honor to work with her at Weir Middle School for five years. There I experienced her wisdom, devotion, faith, and zest for like in a way that inspired me. She rarely had discipline problems because she knew that building a relationship with her students was more important than the content she taught. She respected them and they in turn knew that she cared for each one of them–enough to have high expectations for behavior and performance. Janet made things happen. After attending an NCTE conference and meeting Terry Trueman, she managed to get grant money to do a one school, one book and author visit project. Because of her, many students grew in their empathy of students with disabilities after reading Stuck in Neutral and meeting the author. After her retirement, she messaged me to tell me she and Mr. Trueman had a skype session to discuss his plans to video conference with students. I wasn’t surprised that she really hadn’t left the classroom completely! Because of Janet, countless students have a collection of Letters to Self to help them reflect on their lives as 8th graders. When I took a job in Virginia, my 8th grade team used her idea as an end of year activity and the school continues this practice! I recall her pride in having a daughter who taught at the same school, a son who became a teacher at a high performing school in Pittsburgh, and she beamed as she told me of the paths each of her children followed. Because I taught Dan one year, she particularly kept me up to date on his successes. I know a lot of women who are faith filled, but Janet’s Christian beliefs were reflected in her daily life and interactions with others in such a sincere way. I hope that as you celebrate her life, you recall the influence she had on many others and that your memories of her will be a blessing to each of you. She was a blessing in my life. With you in spirit, Fay Asfour Stump

  9. Ted you & your beautiful family have our heartfelt sympathy on Janet’s passing, we have many wonderful memories of what a special lady she was, we will miss her.

  10. Janet was a special person. She and I taught together at Cove School in Weirton. I only taught there one year, ’72-73 School year. She was a wonderful person and well respected teacher of Math to Sixth graders, at that time. I recently communicated with her on FB , her passing is a shock. I pray for her family that all of their wonderful memories of her will bring them comfort during the difficult moments. She had a full life and that shows with the beautiful video put together in her obituary. Rest in Peace Janet.

  11. Mrs. Zatezalo was an amazing English teacher. She always let me read books from her “personal” library. I still have a couple she told me to keep because I loved them so much! She introduced me to my favorite book and favorite movie, The Outsiders, which, at 13 years old, really changed my outlook on a lot of things in life! Condolences to your family on the loss of an amazing teacher and woman. Paige Dalrymple, former student
