Jessie H. Backel

Jessie H. Backel, 92, of Steubenville, OH, formerly of Weirton, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at The Laurels of Steubenville. Born December 10, 1918 in Chicago, IL, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Zborski Walaszczyk. She was also preceded in death by her husband Theodore Backel in 1958 and sister Evelyn Zapor.
Mrs. Backel served as secretary to Attorney Frank Pietranton. She retired with 15 years of service with Met Life Insurance. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Weirton and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Jessie is survived by her brothers Teddy and Walter Walaszczyk both of Weirton and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 11am Friday at the Union Cemetery, Steubenville, OH.

Dear Walter and family: Our sincere sympathy and our prayers go out to you and family at this sad time. Jessie and her husband were good friends of my parents, Joe and Pat Setlak, and I had the privilege of working with her during the time she worked for Frank Pietranton. She was the sweetest person and good to everyone. My parents and I thought highly of her and know she is in heaven with all the rest of those of the Polish family from years gone by. To the Walaszczyk Family You have my sympathy. I grew up on Overlook Drive where Jessie lived for many years and I only have wonderful memories of her and the neighborhood. She’s joined countless other neighbors now and they are, I’m sure, having a blessed reunion.
To Jessie’s Family It was a pleasure to know Jessie and be her neighbor on Overlook Drive. She and the others that lived on the street are in our thoughts and prayers as they celebrate reuniting with her. You have our sympathy and prayers.
