Joann Sellitti

Joann Sellitti, 84, of Weirton, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away at her home on Saturday, February 27, 2021. Her family was at her side.
Joann was born in Alma, WV, on May 25, 1936. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Weirton, WV. Joann graduated from Weir High School in 1954 and married her high school sweetheart Tony P. Sellitti on December 10, 1954.
A feisty girl from Middlebourne, WV, and a young talented, hardworking bricklayer, with an entrepreneurial spirit, Tony and Joann, over the years, built and designed over 600 homes in the Weirton and surrounding areas. In addition to homes, their company built numerous apartment complexes and numerous government facilities, and commercial buildings throughout the Ohio Valley. They developed and built Country Club Estates, Riverview Estates, Bel-Air Addition, and three City of Weirton Fire Stations, JC Williams Center at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, the Immaculate Conception Church, and the Sacred Heart of Mary Convent. They also built Weirton's only private swim club, which their family still owns and operates today.
Joann enjoyed golfing with the lady's golf association of Williams Country Club and Pleasant Valley Country Club. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge clubs. Through the years, she had the opportunity to travel to Europe and destinations of North and South America and enjoyed staying at her family's hotel in Lauderdale by the Sea.
Most of all, Joann cherished the times she spent with her family. Nothing made her happier than cooking and sharing a meal around her table with her children, grandchildren, and friends.
In addition to her mother, Gertrude Spencer Tournay, and her grandfather, James Spencer, Joann was preceded in death by her husband, Tony P. Sellitti, on November 20, 2000.
She will be remembered with love and admiration by her children, James J. Sellitti (Dana), Terri Grysko (Gary), Lisa Mogan, and Dr. Tony P. Sellitti (Vicky); her eight beautiful grandchildren, James A. Sellitti, Sheena Sellitti- Dunham (Joshua), Carly, Olivia, and Connor Mogan, Nicolette, Gabrielle, and Tony P. Sellitti, III; and her precious great-granddaughter, Arya Mogan.
Joann’s family will have a private family service with Monsignor Joseph Peterson presiding.
She will be laid to rest by her husband Tony at Saint Paul's cemetery mausoleum.

I am grieved to hear the Sellitti family has lost their matriarch. I was fortunate to have been raised in Country Club Estates and to have known some wonderful families, especially the Sellitti’s. To this day, I know few people that are as kind hearted as Mrs. Sellitti…I am fortunate to have had a great childhood, and thankful to have known neighborhood moms like her.

My most treasured memory of her is the compassion she showed during my husband’s long battle with cancer. She often stopped me to check on him, send him well wishes or just for me to tell him she was checking on him. It’s the little things that make the biggest impact on someone. I always appreciated her compassion and it warmed my heart to know she truly cared. Warren always appreciated her thoughtfulness too. She was a “Special Gift, God Bless her.

To the Sellitti family on the passing of your mother and grandmother, seeing her photo and obit bought back many joyous memories of Easter 1965. Stanley and Mary Jane Tuchalski decided after visiting a home built in the Bellaire Edition that Tony P. Sellitti should build a home there for them. I fondly recall the initial planning meetings between them and your Dad in his home office in Pleasant Valley Estates during those warm spring days that followed once the lot was chosen at 229 South Circle Drive. As a 9 year old interested in construction I would observe the negotiations and marveled at the blueprints your Dad patiently shared with my parents and then with me. My younger siblings often played in the tree shaded yard with some of you, very often under the watchful eye of your Mom. They built us an amazing family home completed just in time to go to school in Weirton by the end of August 1965. That home served our family well in the decades that followed, and our friendship with the Sellitti family followed suit. Many thanks for sharing your parents with us at such a crucial time in the history of our family. It was truly a joyous time for us all! May God continue to bless Joann and everyone who loves her. Dear James, Terri, Lisa, and Tony (and all of your family)–On behalf of the Asfour clan, now scattered worldwide, I extend our family’s sympathy on the passing of your mom. Both of your parents have impacted our lives as employers and friends. They were there to witness family celebrations and mourn with us when our dear ones passed on. They shared much with us, including their vacation paradise in Fort Lauderdale and their resources as we built our Weirton homes. Though they achieved the American Dream of owning their own business and financial success, they did so through hard work, never forgetting their humble roots. I will always think of your mom’s and dad’s friendliness and kindness to our family, and pray that though we can’t be there to express our sympathy in person, you realize how important your parents’ lives were in our own.
