John Anthony Varlas

John Anthony Varlas, 91, of Weirton, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at the Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, FL. Born May 25, 1912 in Chios, Greece, he is the son of the late Anthony and Helen Varlas. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Kostidou) Varlas on January 30, 1997 and his brother Steve Varlas. John was the retired owner of the Hi-Lo Club in Weirton and a member of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton. He served his country in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of the AHEPA, and the Chios Society John’s survivors include his sons Anthony (Janet) Varlas of Port Charlotte, FL and George Varlas of Pittsburgh; daughter Helen (Mike) Malandrakis of Indianapolis, IN and 4 grandchildren, Maria and Christina Malandrakis and Melissa and Michael Varlas. Friends will be received Friday from 2:00-4:00PM and 7:00–9:00PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Additional visitation will be held Saturday from 12:00PM until the time of service at 1 PM at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. Very Reverend Father Terry Linos will preside. Interment will follow at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery in Florence, PA, with military services conducted by the Evert Maki American Legion Post 10, VFW 2716 and the Tri State Marine Corp.
