john bright, sr.
John Richard Bright, Sr., 88, of Weirton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home Wednesday, March 19, 2008. Born December 22, 1919 in Weirton, he was the son of the late Grover and Sarah "Sadie" Peyton Bright. John was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, George and Jack Bright and four sisters, Mildred Bright, Josephine Connell, Ruth and Ruby Bright and son-in-law James E. Mawhinney. John was a World War II Veteran of the U. S. Army. He also served as a Deputy Sheriff and Holidays Cove police officer, a volunteer firefighter and instructor, President of the WV Firefighters Association and a member of the Weirton Police Reserves. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, VFW 2716 and AARP. He retired from the City of Weirton and National Steel Corporation after 41 years of service. John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Kromalic Bright; two daughters Marianne Mawhinney and Jan Hicks and her husband Scott; one son John R. Bright, Jr. and his wife Sharon all of Weirton; five grandchildren James K. Mawhinney and his wife Pam, Sarah (Mawhinney) Foti and her husband Chris, Darrin Hicks and his wife Jennifer, Mandy and Tiffany Bright; three great-granddaughters Libby and Abby Mawhinney and Lauren Foti and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 PM Friday at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Funeral Service will be conducted 10 AM Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church with Reverend Father Dean Borgmeyer officiating. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where Military Services will be conducted by the American Legion Firing Squad.
