kenneth bartley, sr.
A man of great faith and love, Kenneth R. Bartley, Sr., 80, of New Cumberland, WV, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Acuity Specialty Hospital in Steubenville, OH. Born December 11, 1928 in Chester, WV, he was the son of the late J. Kenneth and Edith McGaffic Bartley. He was also preceded in death by his sister Helen Drier in April, 2008. With 42 years of service, Mr. Bartley served as the Rural Route Mail Carrier in Northern Hancock County. He was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, where he served as Lector and secretary of the Holy Name Society. Mr. Bartley also served the City of New Cumberland as Mayor from 1969-1971, Councilman, Patrolman, Assistant Chief and Chief of Police from 1985-1991. He also served on the New Cumberland Park and Sanitation Boards. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Weirton Lodge #84, Knights of Columbus 3734, K of C Fourth Degree Assembly and served as Faithful Navigator and Deputy Grand Knight. Kenneth volunteered at St. Paul Grade School Hot Lunch Program. When his children were small, he coached for the New Cumberland Little League and was very active in the New Cumberland PTA. He was an avid baker and dessert maker. He enjoyed gardening and loved to can his vegetables. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Kenneth is survived by his wife Judith Takach Bartley of New Cumberland, whom he married December 3, 1976; sons Kenneth R. (Tina) Bartley, Jr. and Michael Bartley of New Cumberland, Alan Bartley of Virginia and George W. "Bink" Gross of Reno, NV; daughters Rhonda Elizabeth Radeski and Melissa Ann Perkins of New Cumberland; brothers Raymond (Maxine) Bartley of Florida and Harry (Barb) Griffey of Elkhart, Indiana; grandchildren Kenneth, Patrick, Danielle, Travis, Amanda, Michael, Marcus, Lindsey, Kylie, Kayla, Marley, Skylar and Adam. He is also survived by his special granddaughter Payton Elizabeth who was Pappy's star; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews including a very special niece, Bobbie and his special pets Sam and Sassy. Friends will be received Friday from 1-3 and 5-8PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 PM Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 10AM Saturday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church. Reverend Father Larry Dorsch will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery, where Military Services will be conducted by the American Legion Firing Squad.   1. My best memories of “Mayor” is when he helped coached his Son’s , my brother Craig and I on the N.C. Babe Ruth Baseball Team! I was Blessed too have known him, he will be missed!!!!!!! Our Prayers are with you all!!!!!!! Love you Guy’s…Your friends Johnny and Cathy!!!!!!!
