Manuel "Manny" Alatis, 74, of Weirton, WV, died Wednesday October 7, 2009, at the Weirton Medical Center. Manny was born on November 14, 1934 in Weirton, WV, a son of the late Efstathios and Bessie Galanos Alatis. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ann Lucas. Manny served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Ticonderoga. He taught in the Hancock County Schools System from 1961 until his retirement in 1989. Prior to his retirement, he was the principal of the New Cumberland Elementary School. Manny enjoyed life and living it his way. He loved his friends and family. An avid golfer, he had multiple holes in one and was one of the few golfers that recorded aces at both Williams Country Club and Pleasant Valley Country Club. Manny was a member of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, B.P.O.E. 1801, and the Williams Country Club. Surviving include his son; Dr. Stephen R. Alatis and his wife Angela of Weirton; his daughter, Lisa Hapney and her husband, Shane of Baltimore, MD; his three brothers, James Alatis of Washington, D.C., Charles Alatis of Cleveland, OH, and John Alatis, Weirton, WV; his sisters, Des Dandalides of Virginia Beach, VA, and Frances Vlahos of Pittsburgh, PA; his five grandchildren, Nicholas Hapney, Sabrina Alatis, Frankie Hapney, Vanessa and Alenna Alatis. Visitation will be 2-8 PM Friday at the Greco- Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where BPOE 1801 Memorial Services will be held at 6:30PM and Trisagion Services at 7:30PM. Additional visitation will be held 10 AM until time of services at 11 AM Saturday at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton. The Reverend Father Frank A. Milanese will preside. Interment will follow in the Greek Section of Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with military services conducted by the American Legion and Weirton Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 3528 West Street, Weirton, WV 26062.

  19. I remember Mr. Alatis from school. ( Weir High) Don’t remember when I met him but he left a big mark on my life in school and after. He was very good preson. I also remember him from when I worked at Marks(Weir Cove Taxi)in 1968. He’ll be missed.
