martha greco
Martha Virginia Greco, 98, a lifelong resident of Fairmont, W.Va, died peacefully Friday March 6, 2009, at her home, with her daughter and family by her side. She was born on February 3, 1911, in Fairmont, W.Va, a daughter of the late Mikel and Anna Marie Mangus DiCea. Virginia, as she was known by her family and friends, grew up on the East Side of Fairmont, and attended Central School. After she completed the eighth grade, she stayed home and helped her mother with her six brothers and four sisters. When Virginia was 18 years old she traveled to Michigan, and worked as a butcher in a grocery store for a short time, before she returned to her home town of Fairmont, W.Va. After she returned, Virginia worked at Vincent Greco's grocery store, the City Market. While working at the City Market, Virginia met the love of her life, Tony Greco, and the two were married on February 11, 1934. On December 19th of 1934, Virginia and Tony were blessed with a baby boy that they named Charles, and on November 24, 1937, their family was again blessed with a baby daughter, Anna Marie. Tony was known for his strong work ethic, with Owens Illinois Glass Company, and Westinghouse Corporation and Virginia was the caretaker of the family, where she loved to cook, bake bread, and crochet. In the late fifties the couple owned and operated the Jackson Street Furniture Store in Fairmont. Virginia was active in her church, The Immaculate Conception Church in Fairmont. In the late fifties, Virginia and Tony moved to their farm at the top of Tulip Lane, where they had many years of enjoyment. Fresh vegetables from the garden, goat's milk or cheese, and the great aroma of grand ma's cooking was something you could count on, no matter when you visited. In her later years, she loved to travel with her daughter, Anna Marie. She will be sadly missed, and gratefully remembered by her family, and friends. She is survived by her son, Charles F. Greco of Murrells Inlet, S.C; a daughter, Anna Marie Durham of Fairmont, WV; nine grandchildren, Sheryl Legrone, Joseph Kinty, Veronica Winkler, Anna Simpson, Tammye Seidelman, Michael Durham, Michelle Gallaway, Mary Zick, and John Greco; 16 great grandchildren, Olivia, Joshua, Sheryl, Tony, Kelly, Jessica, Aimee, Mariah, Bill, Adam, Autumn, Michael, Jeffry, Katerina, Elle, and Eliza and 5 great great grandchildren, Ginny, Ellisa, Rebekah, Lily, and Layla. Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8 PM Monday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, W.Va, where services will be held at 8: 15 PM Monday. Rev. Fr. Larry Dorsch will preside. The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday from 12:30 PM until time of committal services at 1 PM at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairmont, WV.
