Mary Doris Jones

Mary Doris Jones, of Weirton, died Tuesday February 13, 2001, at the Weirton Medical Center. Doris was raised in Roanoke, VA. She is the daughter of the late George Wyatt Cunningham and Loretta Cunningham. She was preceded in death by her husband John A. Jones on July 13, 1975. John was a Weirton Steel Company Vice President, Director of Public Relations, and editor of the Weirton Steel Employees’ Bulletin. Doris and John were married in Fairmont,WV in 1941. Together they traveled widely throughout the world and lectured about their journeys to many groups in the tri-state area, illustrating their talks with color slides of the places they visited. Her brother Martin Cunningham also preceded her in death. Prior to her marriage, Doris worked for the State Distributive Education Department. When her husband John left to serve in the U.S. Army, Doris took over his position as Executive Secretary of the Weir-Cove Chamber of Commerce. Doris served as President of the Weirton Woman’s Club, State President of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs, member of Williams Country Club, and member of several Hospital Auxiliary Twigs, including Buckeye Twig. Doris was Catholic by faith. Doris was soft spoken, had a ready smile, was friendly, and well liked. Beautiful, tall in stature, she walked like a model. She was indeed a fashion plate. Doris is survived by nephews: John Cunningham, of St. Augustine, FL; Michael J. Cunningham, of Louisville, CO; Morgan Berwinkle, of Locust Grace VA; and John Locascio. Doris gifted her body to the Anatomical Department of the West Virginia University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
