Mary Kathern Burgess Taylor, daughter of the late Curtis and Lydia Skeens Burgess, was born, in Greenup County, Kentucky , on November 4, 1934. She passed from the arms of a loving family into the arms of Jesus on Sunday June 30, 2019.She was also preceded in death by her son Mark on May 20, 2019. She was united in marriage, to Rev. Marvin Taylor, April 9, 1955. To this union were born 5 sons: Mark Timothy, Joseph Wayne (Cynthia), Thomas Dale (Roberta), Philip David (Linda) and Daniel Paul (Christina); seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. From her earliest memory, Kathern wanted to be a Christian, and she kept her focus on the Lord all her life. She served beside her husband, in pastoral ministry for 56 years. She was the perfect pastor's wife. Her dedication to the people she served was willing, total, and loving. Kathern worked, as a bank teller, while her husband pursued his education. She was always willing to sacrifice for the ministry. Her joy was in seeing her husband and sons achieve success. Kathern supported her husband in every sermon, and her children in every football game, wrestling match and academic honor. Kathern's friendly disposition attracted friends, wherever she went. A missionary, who visited in her home said, "It makes you feel good, just to be around Kathern." She served in many capacities in district leadership. As Wesleyan Women Director, she organized the first Women's Retreat in our district. For several years, Kathern served as manager of our district family camp. A district superintendent's wife, after visiting another district, said, "Take me back to my own district.” Kathern represented her district as a delegate to several general conferences of, The Wesleyan Church. She, not only used the Bible to teach her children how to make right choices, she knew how to use a switch as an added incentive. She prayed with her sons, before they left for school each day. Many times she prayed with great earnestness, for the salvation of her children and grandchildren. Kathern enjoyed pursuing a new adventure or challenge. She led her husband out of his comfort zone - by doing such things as: attending Bible college, signing-up for an Alaskan cruise, and, going to the Holy Land. Kathern invested much of her life in ministry to children and youth. She often said, "What is invested in the life of a child is never lost." Her godly example and Christian love helped to mold many a young life for eternity. Kathern loved children - and was never happier than when holding an infant in her arms - or a child on her lap. She started teaching a children’s' Sunday school class, when she was around 12 year's old, and as a teen, she directed a kid's choir, in her church. Elderly people loved Kathern, too. She always took time to listen to them. She was never too busy to listen to someone who had a problem - or just wanted to talk. Friends and family will be received 2-4 and 6-8 PM Tuesday, at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV where funeral services will be conducted 11 AM on Wednesday. Rev. John Lemasters will preside. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Garden, Weirton Share tributes and memories at www.grecohertnick.com 304 748 3219

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My heart is full of memories & love as I think of Kathryn. She always thought of others & was the best example of a Real Christian to all of us. She was a marvelous cook & I especially remember her cinnamon rolls. We all fought over them. I remember her kindness & love shown by her to my parents in their last days on Earth. She was very encouraging & loving to me through the years. She was a wonderful mother & wife. I wish that I could be there to give you all hugs. Since I can’t, I’ll be holding you all up in prayers. Love to all of you ❤️🙏❤️❤️

  2. We have many wonderful memories of the many years spent with Kathern, Rev. Taylor and family. She gave so much of her time to all of us and our children. She was a friend to all of our children and left a caring memory in their hearts of times spent with her. Our kids hold those memories dear to this day. Thank you Kathern for all you’ve done for all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Taylor family as they have lost a beautiful wife and Mother. Your loss is Heaven’s gain for she is with the Lord in GLORY. We love you all.

  3. Spent many a night staying up to the wee hours playing the board game “Sorry” with us. 😁

  4. Marvin 7 Family Marvin , our condolences on the home going of your wife Kathern, may the shepherd walk with you and your family during this time of lost and grief, our thoughts are with you as you walk though this valley with the knowledge the day is coming when you will be reunited with her. Love and prayers Gene & Velma Glendenning

  5. She was a WONDERFUL loving person that I had the privilege and honor to have as my aunt. She always made you feel important and loved and was a joy to be around. Kind and soft spoken though I’ve heard her get on my cousins a couple of times! Years ago my cousins had found a baby opossum and was keeping it upstairs in their room and feeding it and caring for it. Boy she didnt like the thought of that thing in her house and I’m sure as soon as possible she made them let it go but even though she didn’t want them messing with it ,not before she knew it could take care of itself. She had one of the biggest hearts of anyone I’ve ever known and I have been honored to have had her in my life. – Marti Taylor Boggs

  6. I remember going with her to visit members of the congregation who were ill and/or unable to attend church services

  7. Every memory Danny and I have of Kathryn Taylor is of gentleness, kindness, authentic woman of God’. After we learned of Kathryn’s homegoing, our minds went back to the many years of youth camp that she spent ‘loving on our teens’, and encouraging us, as leaders❣️ The world is a better place because of people like Kathryn Taylor❣️

  8. So many memories of this God living and patient woman. We will dearly miss her. Mrs. Taylor influenced a lot of us by being caring and patient. She was a second mother to many. God Speed, Mrs. Taylor.

  9. Dear Rev. Marv and family: It is with great saddness that I am aware of your loss. Please known that you are in my thoughts and prayers as you grieve. Sincerely, Stanley Tuchalski

  10. Dan my deepest sympathy to you and your family – In reading your mothers obituary I see what a wonderful giving person she was – my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours – may she rest in peace

  11. My wife, our three young daughters, and I moved to Toronto, OH in 1994 to serve as pastor of the Wesleyan Church. The District Superintendent, Jeff Mansell, soon paid us a visit. He told me, “I need to introduce you to Marvin and Kathern Taylor. They are godly people and could serve as mentors.” He was right. Pastor Taylor always gave sound advice. Kathern opened her heart to us. She was so kind, wise, and accepting. It was our good fortune to know her. She blessed all of us in so many way. She ran the race faithfully, now she is enjoying eternal life in heaven.

  12. Aunt Katy was one of the sweetest women I have known. Also one of the hardest working, often cooking for dozens of people. She always had kind and loving words to say, always smiling and helping others. The world was a brighter place with her presence. She will be sorely missed. Many prayers for your comfort as you suffer a great loss. ~ Chris & Joanna Thomas

  13. To Tom (coach) Taylor, his wife and family. Please accept our deepest sympathy on the passing of your mother. We are truly sorry and will keep you all in our prayers. Dave and Vicki Reitter
