Michael J. "Smo" Smoljanovich, Jr., 52, of Weirton, formerly of Steubenville, OH, passed away November 19, 2009 at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, following a brief illness. He was born on June 1, 1957 in Weirton, WV, a son of Ruth Condrin Smoljanovich of Weirton and the late Michael J. Smoljanovich, Sr. Smo was employed at Weirton Steel, now Arcelor Mittal Plant, in Weirton, for the last 33 years where he was a side trimmer operator in the Tin Mill. He was a member of the Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Weirton, Knights of Columbus 3734, Madonna High School Class of 1975 and the United Steelworkers Union. Smo was a devoted father, husband and family man, an avid sports enthusiast and had previously enjoyed coaching young athletes in baseball, football and basketball. Michael is survived by his mother, Ruth Condrin Smoljanovich; his wife, Laurette Tiberio Smoljanovich, whom he married on January 12, 1979; his two sons, Michael (and wife Leslie) Smoljanovich of Bradenton, FL, and Jason Smoljanovich; his brother, Ron (and wife Pam) Smoljanovich ; his sisters, Patty (and husband Al) Boniti, Kathy (and husband Duff) Birkhimer, Diana Smoljanovich, and Nancy (and husband Mike) Garan all of Weirton, WV; his brothers and sisters in law, Anthony and Jeanne Tiberio, Mark and Tina Tiberio all of Wintersville, OH, and Marilyn and Rick Woodruff of Liberty, MO; his nieces, Christianne, Danielle and Dana Tiberio, Stacy Woodruff, Erin Birkhimer and Rebecca Garan; his nephews, Eric Birkhimer, Mark Tiberio, Ricky Woodruff and Joseph Garan. At Michael's request there will be no visitation at the funeral home. His family will greet friends and relatives, on Friday, November 27, 2009, from 9AM until the 10AM Funeral Liturgy at the Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church in Weirton. Michael also requested that memorial contributions in his memory be made to the Aaron Davies Memorial Basketball Scholarship Fundc c/o Weirton Area Community Foundation, Post Office Box 31, Weirton, WV 26062.
