  9. Family of Nick Barber, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Nick and I were H.S. classmates and also team mates on baseball and softball teams. After we graduated and both were working at Weirton Steel for about one year Nick asked me what was I doing with regard to pending draft inti the Korean War and I responded that I would just wait to get drafted. Nick said that his whole family was Navy so why didn’t we inlist and get it over with. I agreed and we went to the recruiters’ offic and got a promise that we would get into Navy Air Group. We both quit work about six weeks before we had to go to Pittsburg for physicals, tests , and induction. We partied pretty well for those six weeks and at the induction center in Pitts. as I came out of some test room I saw Nick setting in a chair witth his head down and I walked over and said, “what’s wrong?”. He looked up at me and said, “I flunked the physical, high blood pressure!” My response was “WHAT!, You’re the one that wanted to join the Navy!” Well, it appears that our partying spiked the blood pressure nad it certainly wasn’t permanent because he went into the Army a few months later for two years. As for me. since I was already there and passed everything, I took the oath and spent four years in the Navy. It was one of the greatest decisions I ever made. Nick and I just lost touch after that, but we sure did bring up old times at our 50th class reunion. We really had some great friendship and experiences as we grew up. One short story, the last year that we played Legion ball Nick was pitching some batting practice and I lined one back to the mound and hit Nick in the hand, splitting his right index finger. Nick was our first baseman and I played left field. We really had no backup first baseman so Nick and I told George Rodak[coach] that I would play first base and Nick would coach me. Well, it went pretty well and we got out of the region but lost at the state. Atthough we lost touch my memory of my great friend will always bring a smile to my face for the guy who put me in the Navy, was teammate, a party partner, a high school buddy, and I am positive a great husband and father. My sincere condolences. Phil McCabe
