patrick long
Patrick Thomas Long of Hancock County passed away December 2, 2020. Patrick is survived by wife of 53 years Patricia Long, daughter Ann-Lisa Allen (Chris), son Patrick Long Jr., brother Michael Long (Carol), sister Mary Jane Thompson (Tom), and one granddaughter Kaitlin Swift. As a young boy, Patrick was interested in emergency vehicles, firemen, police, Dick Tracy, and his two-way radios, cars, trucks, Boy Scouts, Life Guarding, and scuba diving. He was very creative, liked inventing solutions to problems, and never met a stranger, even from an early age. He loved to travel in the states and Europe. One of his favorite things was Mini-Cooper runs with his granddaughter, Kaitlin. He was someone who did not seek attention but gained it by involving himself with others. He brought a selfless, optimistic view to every situation, saving lives as a diver, responding as a fireman, running the fire department, or helping a friend with anything. He led with a sense of humor, often self-deprecating. No matter the audience or situation. He thought Weirton was his world, but when travel beckoned, he easily became a traveler of the world. His long Weirton Steel Company service followed that of both grandfathers and his dad. He was a friend to all, a supporter of good works, but family was his priority. Nobody was more willing to share their life with new and old acquaintances. His knowledge and use of all sorts of technology would rival MacGyver. He had a passion for leaving things better than he found them. He inspired many to do the same in their own lives. He will be missed by many. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 5, from 1:00 until the 3:00 pm funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the following; The Hancock County Animal Shelter PO Box 84 New Cumberland, WV 26047 WTOV 9 Coats for Kids; PO Box 9999 Steubenville, OH 43952 Hancock County Humane Foundation 241 Ohio River BLVD New Cumberland, WV 26047 Private interment will be held at the convenience of Patrick’s family. 1. I’m so happy that I was able to spend time with Mr. Pat at our breakfast outing recently. The obituary was a beautiful tribute to him. I bet he and Al are solving all kinds of technical issues together again. Sincere condolences to you, Patricia, Ann Lisa, Patrick, Jr. and Kaitlin. ❤️

  2. My heartfelt sympathies to Pat’s family. It was always a pleasure to see him at AAA and help with some travel arrangements.

  3. AAA lost a lifetime member! Condolences to the Long family. We will miss doing his spur of the moment Triptiks. His love for travel especially with his granddaughter was priceless. May he Rest In Peace. Donna & Linda……AAA Weirton

  4. Pat was a great guy, co-worker and brother firefighter. I had the pleasure to work with him in the Weirton Steel Fire Department for 10 years. Love and prayers for his family.

  5. Dear Pat and Family, We are so sorry to hear of Pat’s passing. Your family is in our prayers at such a difficult time. Rest In Peace Pat. Tim and Angela Reinard

  6. Pat came to my Grandmother Kirk’s house to respond to a 911 call for my mother. She had the flu and then chest pain. He was so calm and cool. Made us feel like it was all going to be ok. And it was. He was so funny! Always had a cute story or joke! And he loved his family. Patty was his first love but the kids and granddaughter quickly filled his life to the fullest. Joe and I are so sorry but we will hold you in our hearts and in our prayers. Sandy and Joe Holmes

  7. I’ll always remember the Halloween he dressed up as a woman….and I was envious of his legs! While we didn’t see much of each other over the past years (distance), the bond was always there. I will miss him ‘being there’ forever.

  8. Pat (front row left) in his natural habitat – then Chief of Weirton VFD Co. No. 1. The picture was the centerfold of the 1990 Weirton Steel Corporation Annual Report. I am not sure he ever knew what an effect he had on those of us in the Weirton area emergency services, including me and some who went on to serve elsewhere as career firefighters and officers. After 50 years of friendship, this has left a huge hole in my life, for sure. (David Shroads, Amelia Island, FL).

  9. Pat, Patrick, and Ann-Lisa, You are in our thoughts and prayers. Pat was such a constant in our lives. We always looked forward to talking to him when we visited our family. We will miss him deeply. Prayers, Karen (Kane) and Tim Jones

  10. I grew up with Patrick (Pat as I knew him) and fondly remember the times my family spent with his. My condolences to Patricia and their children and to Mary Jane and Michael. Ed Tarowsky Indianapolis, IN

  11. Pat was the best neighbor anyone could ask for. He always watched out for everyone. He was always willing to lend a hand, check on the elderly, clean the snow for everyone and so much more. Pat always had a smile to share and a joke to tell. He loved sharing stories about the people he treasured the most, his family. There are some stories you may not want me to repeat. I am great full to have known Pat and I will deeply miss him. May God comfort Pat’s family at this most difficult time and always. ✝️☦️✝️

  12. Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss… Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
