Peter Bakich, 89, of Weirton died Saturday June 15, 2019, at his home. His loving family was at his side. Born on September 14, 1930, in Shoaf, PA, Pete was a son of the late Steve and Milica “Anna” Wonkovich Bakich. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, George, Mitch and Sam Bakich, and his sister, Katherine Ora Evans. A US Navy veteran of the Korean War, Pete retired, after 35 years of service, from Weirton Steel as a crane operator in the Strip Steel. He was a member of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church in Steubenville; the Serbian Men’s Club, Serb’s Over the Hill golf group, and the Weirton Steel 25 Year Club. Pete will always be remembered for his camaraderie he enjoyed with his friends in town, on the golf course, and while he ran the bar at the Wednesday Chicken Blasts at the picnic grounds. He loved walking for exercise, watching his Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, and sharing his opinions with others. He will be remembered with love by his wife of 59 years, Dora Tiberio Bakich, his three daughters, Diane and Michael McKean of Columbus, OH, JoAnn and Sam Mazzone of Follansbee, WV and Josephine Lamberti of Weirton, WV; his eight grandchildren, Michelle Miller (Mark), Michael and Erik McKean, Shelby (Anthony Miller), Smantha and Matthew Mazzone, Miranda and Mitch Lamberti; and his great granddaughters, AveryJo and McKenna Miller. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Sunday June 16, 2019 at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street with a Pomen Service to be held at 6:45 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 PM Monday in the Funeral Home. Rev. Fr. Stefan Djoric will preside. Interment will follow at the Serbian Cemetery, Weirton, WV with military honors conducted by the United States Navy and the American Legion Honor Guards. Pete’s family would like to thank Valley Hospice for the care they provided in the last few weeks of Pete’s life.   4. My dear Uncle Pete. You lived with my family until I was five years old. I wept the day you moved from Pittsburgh to Weirton. You were my childhood hero.   7. I knew Pete from the Picnic Grounds and from the stories my grandpa George Zatezalo would tell. Pete was so kind, always making sure a cold one was poured for me and that he always gave me a few dollars so I could have good beer at college. He will be so missed!
