Reverend Mr. Deacon Richard Walter Mankowski, Sr., 79, of Weirton, WV died Monday December 22, 2014, at the Valley Hospice Care Center North, in Steubenville, OH. Born on September 25, 1935, in Weirton, WV, Richard was a son of the late Frank A. and Stella Bernice Ostrowski Mankowski. He was also preceded in death by his son, John Mankowski in 1961 and his brother, Edward J. Mankowski. Richard retired as a millwright from Weirton Steel after 42 years of service. He was an active leader to our area's youth for many years. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 132 for over thirty five years. While in scouting, he received "The Mayors Award in 1970, the "Silver Beaver" from the Fort Steuben Area Council in 1975 and the Saint George Emblem in 1980 from the Diocese of Wheeling Charleston , in recognition of outstanding service to the spiritual development of Catholic youth. In addition to Boy Scouts, he was a board member of the Lauretta B. Millsop Council of Camp Fire USA. Richard was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus 3734 and the Fourth Degree Assembly 1194 , where he served as Faithful Navigator, Faithful Friar and Chaplin. In 2000 his family was awarded Family of the Year by the Knights of Columbus, and in 2001 he was awarded "Knight of the Year". Deacon Richard was an active member of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister until his ordination to the Deaconate in August 1985 by Bishop Francis Schulte. Since 1985 Richard has served his parish as a permanent Deacon. He was Director of the RCIA and was appointed Interim Pastoral Cooridinator for Sacred Heart of Mary in 1992, and a representative for the Wheeling Vicariate to the Ninth Diocesan Synod . He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Theresa Mosiejewski Mankowski, whom he married on May 10, 1958; a son, Richard Walter Mankowski, Jr.; four daughters, Bernadette and James Zucosky, Virginia Lamp and her fianc Michael Heilman, Annette and Chuck Toland, and Theresa and David Lamp all of Weirton, WV; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Friday at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church 200 Preston Avenue Weirton, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM on Saturday. Knights of Columbus will lead the Rosary at 4 PM and a Vigil Service will be conducted at 8 PM in the Church. The Fourth Degree Honor Guard will serve as pall bearers. Interment will follow at Saint Paul's Cemetery, Weirton, WV In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 200 Preston Avenue , Weirton, WV or to the Ohio River Valley Council Campership Fund PO Box 6186, Wheeling, WV 26003.
