reverend dennis shirer
Reverend Dennis D. Shirer went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 27, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Kathleen (Mitchell) Shirer, father Harold Shirer and granddaughters Carol Ann Lawrence and Skyler Mackenzie Shirer. He is survived by his mother, Ruth (Gardner) Shirer of Weirton; brother Rev. David (Marta) Shirer of Ravenswood, WV; two sisters Shela Foltz of Newell, WV and Tammy (Ralph) Barbee of Englewood, FL; four children Carl (Amanda) Shirer of Wintersville, OH, Katie (Lee) Rawson of Wellsburg, WV, Erica Shirer of Paden City, WV and Beth (Chris) Lawrence of New Martinsville, WV and six grandchildren Christopher Shirer, Daniel Rawson, Caleb Lawrence, Makayla Brazauskas, Nathan Rawson and Samuel Shirer. Dennis was a loving husband, caring father, fun-loving grandfather, hard worker, but most of all, he loved his Lord and Savior and he ministered to many. Dennis was a 1972 graduate of Weir High School and went on to attend West Liberty College. Later he completed the Nazarene Home Course of Ministerial Studies to become an ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene. Dennis worked as an office clerk and then labor foreman of the coke plant and river docks of Weirton Steel from 1972 to December of 1995. In the fall of 1988 he began full time ministry as the Pastor of the Wheeling Mar-Win Church of the Nazarene while still working full time at Weirton Steel. He also pastored the Ripley, Sistersville and Kingwood Churches of the Nazarene. Dennis will be greatly missed by his family, friends and congregations, but we can have the comfort of knowing that if we serve the Risen Lord as he did, that one day we will be reunited. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Weirton First Church of the Nazarene, where additional visitation will be held Saturday from 11am until the 12pm funeral service. The Reverends David Shirer, Joseph Foltz and Keith Hostutler will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Johns Cemetery in Colliers, WV. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My Condolences to your family. Grief can be so hard at this difficult time. Revelations 21 : 3,4 speaks of a time when there will be no more mourning nor death in the near future. Draw comfort from God’s promises.

  2. I worked with Dennis in the Coke Plant at Weirton Steel before he become a minister. We become friends and He was a great Christian. I am sorry to hear of him passing, but I know he is in Heaven, and some day we will see him again. Prayers for the family.

  3. Dennis was a good friend, a band-mate (and primo saxophonist). Dennis was always someone to be emulated, even when we were being a bunch of knuckleheads at band camp or on a band trip. He is the first of my close friends from WHS to pass and this hit me hard. I wish I could be there, but I am hospitalized. My condolences to his family, and I am sure he is now sitting at the Hand of Our Lord.

  4. I am saddened and shocked to hear of Denny’s passing. We were childhood friends and attended church together at Weirton Nazarene where our families were close friends who socialized frequently. I have so many happy memories of those times. We played instruments in the church orchestra together and my father, Charles Oney, directed. My condolences to Denny’s entire family who loved him dearly. He will be a great addition to the saints in Heaven’s choir & orchestra. Love & Prayers, Linda Oney

  5. My love and condolences to all the Shirer family . I was so sad on hearing of Denny’s passing. I am positive he is having a wonderful time with the Lord! Barbara Walter
