Richard Joseph Sakara, 78, of Weirton, West Virginia passed away on Saturday March 4, 2017, after losing a hard fought battle with cancer. He died peacefully with his family by his side. He was born on December 10, 1938 in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of the late Paul and Emily Sabel Sakara and his late stepfather, Steve Horvat. Richard retired from Weirton Steel as a Superintendent of Fuel and Energy. He was the President of the Weirton Steel Management Club and a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps., and was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Richard will be remembered for his big smile, sense of humor and unconditional love for his family. He loved golfing and served many years on the board at Williams Country Club (where he had a hole in one on #12). He spent tireless hours working with the other board members to improve all aspects of the country club for its' members. Richard was an avid gardener and enjoying delivering the fruits of his labor to all of his friends and neighbors. When not gardening or golfing, he spent his retirement years traveling with his family. He is survived by his wife Susan Sakara of 56 years and his two daughters, April and Michael Gilley of Cupertino, California and Deborah and Dr. Charles Capito of Oakdale Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Paige and Taylor Gilley and Cameron, Chase and Isabella Capito. In addition, he is survived by two twin brothers, Tony Sakara & the late Rita Sakara and Paul and Dee Sakara and many nieces and nephews all of Youngstown, Ohio. Visitation will be 4-8 pm on Monday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM Tuesday at Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Weirton. Fr. Tony Thurston will preside. Immediately following the Mass military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corp and the American Legion Honor Guard. Richard will be cremated and his cremains will be placed at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. He would call me at my work for his work responsibilities and ask, ” Where is the big guy.” I always wanted to say, “You are the big guy.” So happy to hear his kind voice calling to get his work done.
