Robert Connell

Robert S. Connell, 84, of Weirton, passed away Friday, January 5, 2007 at Golden Oaks in Follansbee, WV. Born January 12, 1922 in Weirton, he was the son of the late William J. and Pauline Conway Connell. Robert was also preceded in death by his brother Bill. After 43 years of service, Robert retired from Weirton Steel. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He has been a member, and held numerous offices, of the VFW #2716 since July 15, 1944 and has been a Life Member since 1960. Robert was also affiliated with the Hancock County Chapter #14 R.A.M., Evert Maki American Legion Post 10, Weirton Commandry #30, AARP Chapter #3846, Osiris Shrine Temple of Wheeling, AF.AM New Cumberland Lodge 22, Northern Panhandle Shrine Club, American Bowling Association, World War II Last Man’s Club and the 83rd Infantry Division Association of WWII. He served with Company “B”, 329 Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division in the US Army. He participated in E.T.O., landed “D” Day +4 at Omaha Beach and was awarded the Purple Heart and Cluster for his service. Robert was discharged in December 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Robert’s survivors include his wife Imogene “Jean” Summers Connell of Weirton whom he married June 19, 1947; son Ronald K. Connell of O’Fallon, Missouri; daughters, Diane Kile of Villa Hills, KY and Lisa K. Torset of Everett, WA;and 7 grandchildren. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1-3 and 6-8PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where funeral services will be conducted at 1:00PM on Monday with Reverend Chuck Jerman presiding. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 10 and Weirton Honor Guard. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the loving and caring staff of Golden Oaks and Valley Hospice. They both took care of Robert with the utmost compassion... Thank you all.
