Long-time local neurologist and City of Weirton Hall of Fame Inductee, Sarjit Singh, MD passed away at home Thursday December 22, 2016. He was 77 years old. Born in Tanda, India in 1939, Dr. Singh graduated from Amritsar Medical College and trained in neurology at Edward J. Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, New York. He completed a clinical fellowship at Harvard University. He emigrated to the United States in 1969 with his wife, retired pathologist, Dr. Ranjeet Singh. In 1975, Dr. Singh and his wife settled in Weirton, West Virginia where they quickly became leading members of the community and raised a son, Dr. Satbir Singh, now a urologist in Steubenville. Dr. Singh was appointed by then-Governor Caperton to the West Virginia Board of Medicine in 1992, which licenses and governs doctors throughout the state. He later served as the Board's president in 1998. In 1991, Dr. Singh was recognized by Governor Caperton as a Most Distinguished West Virginian, one of the state's highest honors. Dr. Singh also served as an assistant clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He was extensively published and he authored numerous papers including publications for the American Academy of Neurology and the Indian Neurological Association. Also in 1991, Dr. Singh was elected by his peers to the office of President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, a group representing thousands of medical doctors of Indian origin. During his tenure, Dr. Singh was instrumental in establishing three charitable medical dispensaries in India which now serve many thousands of needy patients. For those humanitarian services, Dr. Singh was awarded the "International Mother India Award" by the Non-Resident Indian Institute in New Delhi. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Urban Health Alliance representing ethnic minority physicians whose purpose was to aid the less fortunate in their healthcare needs. Dr. Singh was known locally by his patients for his compassion and personal attention to their health care needs and his cheerful disposition. He was past president of the medical staff at both Weirton Medical Center and Trinity Hospital. Dr. Singh actively practiced neurology up to the time of his death. Dr. Singh was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the National Democratic Committee in 1992. He was an active member of the Weirton Rotary and supported its charitable fundraising efforts that helped fund the new soccer fields in Weirton. An avid golfer, Dr. Singh was also a long-time member of Williams Country Club. In addition to his wife, Ranjeet, and son, Satbir, Dr. Singh is survived by his daughter-in-law, Dr. Shalu Singh, and his grandchildren, Sheraj and Simreen. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother and two sisters and is survived by two brothers. Visitation will be held 4 PM - 6 PM Friday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV Private cremation will take place on Saturday The family requests that charitable donations in memory of Dr. Singh be made to the Weirton Rotary Club Scholarship Fund PO Box 179 C.S.   8. I worked with Dr. Singh at St. John’s and then Trinty. He was an awesome doctor. As a nurse I learned so much from him. We developed a wonderful friendship, I will always cherish. He was one of a kind. My fondest memory was at Christmas he would always come to our department looking my friend’s rum cake she made every year. We made sure he always got a piece.   15. I worked with Dr. Singh @ OVH when it was a truly a hospital. I managed the Critical Care Units. He was a friend to me and my nurses, a great teacher, and so compassionate with the patients & family. I have worked in several states & can honestly say none of the neurologists I worked with were as competent as he was. This area has truly lost a great physician as well as a great man. Your family also has suffered a great loss. My heart goes out to you.

  28. I am saddened to just find out about Dr Singh’s passing. We were in the Weirton Rotary Club together for years and I chose him as my mother’s neurologist. He was always so kind and made my mother laugh. He also made such an impression on my then young daughter, Kerri, who had much affection for Dr Singh! She attended our Rotary lunches often and always loved seeing Dr Singh. Our community will miss such an outstanding, involved and caring citizen and physician!   29. I am shocked and deeply grieved to learn about Dr. Sarjit Singh’s demise. It was about 21 years ago that I was welcomed by Dr. and Mrs. Dr. Sarjit Singh in their home in Weirton as a member of the Rotary exchange team from India. Till date I feel the warmth of my stay. It is true that after my stay we had minimal contact but my aforementioned host couple was always remembered by me with great affection. I pray to waheguru ji that may Dr. Sarjit Singh’s soul rests in peace. My deepest condolences to the family.
