Sophia Pipinos

Sophia Pipinos, 93, of Weirton, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at the Weirton Medical Center. She was born March 15, 1914 in Mesohori on the island of Karpathos, Greece. Her parents Father Emmanuel and Presvytera Irene Sakellarides, husband Timoleon Pipinos, son Mario T. Pipinos, daughter Irene Pipinos, brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Sophia was a homemaker and well-known philanthropist. She was a member of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and the All Saints Ladies Philoptochos Society. In memory of her children, Mario and Irene, Sophia’s benevolence assisted the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, CHANGE, Inc. Mario Pipinos Neighborhood Center, Head Start of the Northern Panhandle, The Mario Pipinos Head Start School in Weirton, Holy Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery in Pennsylvania, Mary H. Weir Public Library, Weir High School scholarships, AHEPA scholarships, Weirton Medical Center, Weirton Medical Center Foundation, Weirton Ministerial Association Holiday dinners and many churches in Greece. Sophia’s survivors include her step-son Michael Pipinos of Weirton, a sister in Karpathos, Greece and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Greece. The family will receive friends Sunday 1-3 and 6-8 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton where the Trisagion Service will be conducted at 7:30 PM. Additional visitation will be held Monday from 10 until the 11AM funeral service at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. Reverend Father Frank A. Milanese will officiate. Interment will be in the All Saints Greek Orthodox Cemetery, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 3528 West Street, Weirton, WV 26062.
