Sophie Ellis, 82, of Wintersville, OH died Sunday, April 21,2002, at the Dixon Health Care Center. Sophie was born on January 7, 1920, in Cliftonville, WV, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Benzo Shuma. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Andy Ellis, on February 13, 1995; two sisters, Ann Sheets and Helen Alvarez; and six brothers, Andy, Michael, Stanley, John, Frank, and Steve Shuma. Sophie was a homemaker and a member of the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Weirton. Her four sons, Andrew of Raymond, Maine, Stephen of Murfreesboro, TN, Michael of South Haven, MS, John of Quarryville, PA; her two daughters, Marianne Ellis of Wintersville, OH and Margaret VanKirk of Wintersville, OH, survive. Her two sisters, Florence Chuma of Cuyahoga Falls, OH and Mary Bukovinsky of Hurricane, WV; eight grandchildren, Thomas VanKirk of Wooster, OH, Jessica Ellis of Chicago, IL, Christopher Ellis of Washington, DC, Eric Crust of Wintersville, OH, Nicole Crust, of Greensboro, NC, Zachary Ellis of Murfreesboro, TN, Meghan and Emily Ellis of Quarryville, PA and one great granddaughter, Katarina VanKirk of Wooster, OH also survive. Visitation will be 2-4 & 7-9 PM Tuesday at the Greco - Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where Parastas services will be held at 8:30 PM. Additional visitation will be 12:30 PM until the time of service at 1:30 PM Wednesday, at the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, 604 Colliers Way, Weirton. Rev. Fr. Theodore Shomsky and Rev. Fr. Alexander Padlo will preside. Interment will follow at the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cemetery, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Hospice, 380 Summit Avenue, Steubenville, OH 43952 or to the Urban Mission, 301 North Fifth Street, Steubenville, OH 43952 (on the memo line please specify HUNGER).
