William “Bill” Sylvester Byers, 91, of Concord, NC, formerly of Weirton, WV, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020, at his residence. Bill was born May 17, 1929, in Weirton, WV to the late Robert “Bert” Byers and the late Marie Byers. Bill grew up in Weirton with his two brothers until he met Gloria Jean Mancinelli, whom he married in 1950. They were married for 60 years until her death in 2010. Bill and Gloria were avid sports fans. They regularly attended local high school football and basketball games and were season ticket holders at WVU football and basketball games for many years. Bill loved to work in his yard and was an avid gardener. He kept an immaculate home his entire life and never met a stranger. Bill and Gloria relocated to Concord, NC, in 2001 to be near their son and his family. Bill served his country in the United States Army in the Engineering Construction Battalion as a crane operator during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he worked at Weirton Steel for forty- seven years as an overhead crane operator. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Jean Byers; brothers, Robert Byers, Jr. and James Byers; and his granddaughter, Kelly Clevenger. Survivors include his son, David W. Byers and wife Karen; granddaughter Kristin Alexander and husband, Joey; great-granddaughter, Vivian Alexander; and great-grandsons, Sam and Parker Clevenger; nephew, John “Jack” Kostur and wife Virginia; grandnephew Ryan Kostur and wife Marie, and their daughter Madyson; and grandniece Lindsay Mermon and husband Brad, and their children Peyton and Bradyn. Due to Covid-19, a private funeral and burial will be held. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis NC 28081.
