William L. Haspel, 88, of Weirton died Tuesday March 31, 2009 at his home. He was born on June 15, 1920 in Joffrey, PA, a son of the late William and Martha Ritchie Haspel. Bill, as he was known to family and friends, grew up in Eldersville and Burgettstown, PA. He served his country during World War II, as a Platoon Sergeant in the US Army. After returning from the service, Bill met Marjorie J. Fife, and the two were united in marriage. In 1947, the couple moved to Weirton, WV, and started their family. Bill retired as a Steel Pourer from Weirton Steel B.O.P. after 34 years of service. Bill's family was his life, His children affectionately referred to him as the "Best Dad in the World" he never missed an event that his children or grandchildren participated in. Some of his favorite pastimes where hunting, fishing, watching NASCAR, and playing KENO . In his retirement years, he loved spending time with his family especially in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was an avid reader, and was very interested in reading about World War II. Bill was a member of the WSX 25 Year Club, and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie J. (Fife) Haspel on September 21, 1999; three brothers, John, Ernie and Kenny Haspel; a sister, Lucille Haspel. Bill is survived by his two sons, William "Bill" (Gwen) Haspel and James F. "Fred" (Sandy) Haspel; his two daughters, Rebecca (Ted) Dragisich and Marjorie Stewart all of Weirton; two brothers, Clifford (Marty) Haspel and Raymond Haspel all of Weirton; a sister, Dorothy Howard of Burgettsown, PA; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, his nieces, nephews, and his little dog, Cokie. His family will celebrate his life on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, where services will be held 11 AM Friday. Captain Ed Long will preside. Interment will follow at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton, WV with military services conducted by the American Legion and the Weirton Honor Guard.
