Florence Haber, 97, of Weirton, WV, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at WVU Medicine – Weirton, just two days after celebrating her 97th birthday.

Born on May 20, 1928, in Weirton, she was one of three children born to Andrew and Sophia Gotfryd Koper. In addition to her parents, Florence was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chester S. Haber; her brother, Walter Koper; her sister, Virginia Walker; and a step-great-grandson, Brayden Tipton.

Florence and Chester’s love story began in their youth as neighbors—one family living on Kentucky Street and the other on Ohio Street. Their bond stood the test of time and war. When Chester returned from serving in World War II, he simply asked, “When are we getting married?”—and in the midst of the historic January 31, 1951 blizzard, Florence and Chester, accompanied by his brother and her sister, walked to Sacred Heart of Mary Church and became husband and wife.

Shortly after marrying, Florence left her position as a tin flopper at Weirton Steel, as company policy did not allow married ladies to be employed there. From then on, she devoted herself to caring for her home and family, raising their three daughters with love and dedication.

Florence was known for her strength, resilience, and uncompromising will. She did things her way—unapologetically and with determination. Her legacy is a testament to the values of hard work, loyalty, and love of family.

She will be remembered with love by her three daughters: Lorraine (Casimir) Tluchowski, Linda (Robert) Hoge, and Loretta (Michael) Winterhalter; two granddaughters, Adeline (Matthew) Apesos and Anna (Barton) Forrester; step-granddaughter, Christina (Brandon) Tipton; five great-grandchildren: McKinley, Mara, and Harrison Apesos, Katarina and Charlotte “Charlie” Forrester; and step-great-grandson, Nathan Tipton.

A faithful Parishioner of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Florence was also a member of the Rosary Society.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday May 24, 2025 at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church with Father Tony Thurston presiding.

Afterwards she was laid to rest next to her husband at Saint Paul’s Cemetery.
