alexander johnston
Alexander “Shorty” Johnston, 79, of Fredricktown, Ohio formerly of Steubenville and Weirton, died Sunday, May 11, 2003 at the Mt. Carmel St. Ann Hospital in Westerville, Ohio. He was born July 5, 1923 in London, England, son of the late William and Alice Woodcock Johnston. Alex, was also preceded in death by his brother Leslie Johnston, and his sister Lillian Groves. After 30 years Alex retired from Weirton Steel where he worked in the Open Hearth and Tin Mill. He also served as Union Steward for many years. During World War II, Alex served his country as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne in Normandy, and throughout Europe. He was a member of the American Legion Post 10 in Weirton. He is survived by his son Peter Johnston; daughter Nikki (Johnston) Josai and her husband John, all of Weirton; nephews Bill Johnston and his wife Tina of Weirton and Gary Groves and his wife Sheila; nieces Mary Catherine Casale of Toronto, Ohio and Kim Groves of Wintersville, OH; great niece Kelsey Groves and 4 great nephews James Casale, Christopher Groves, William and Scott Johnston. A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2003, 12:00 noon, at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 3528 West Street, Weirton. Share tributes with his family at www.grecohertnick.com.
