Alfred Louis "Danny" Machesney, 66, of Newport News, Virginia passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 12, 2014. Born on September 5, 1947 in Steubenville, Ohio. Danny resided in Newport News, VA for the last 46 years. He was a graduate of Wintersville High School. A Vietnam Veteran, he served in the United States Army from 1965-1968, and then joined the Army reserves from 1968-1985. He retired from the Newport News Police Department as a Master Police Officer in 2010 with 37 years of devoted service. He was admired and respected by all of his fellow officers and was often called "Dad" by the new recruits. Danny was an active member of the local F.O.P. where he served as secretary/treasurer for many years. He was also an instructor for the local American Red Cross specializing in CPR for people and pets. He was recently elected to the board of his Home Owners Association and also was past president of the Harley Owners Group in Hampton Roads. Danny was preceded in death by his parents, John and Goldie Hall Machesney, brothers Richard, Walter, and John, and brother-in-law Chuck Oliver. Danny is survived by his sister, Cindy Oliver of Weirton, nieces Carrie Shultz (Eddie) of Joffre, PA, and Casey Oliver of Weirton, and great nephew Caleb (Louie) Shultz. Danny will always be remembered as carefree and adventurous who loved his family, friends, OBX, Steelers football, Pirates baseball, and Penguins hockey. He was greatly loved by many, and will leave a huge void in the hearts of the people he leaves behind, but all can take solace that he is in a better place and with his beloved parents. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10AM until the 11AM funeral service at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Interment will be held at Union Cemetery in Steubenville, OH with Military Services conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 6912 G Washington Hwy, Yorktown, VA 23692 or FOP Lodge 25, 10605 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA 23601.
