Andy Popkie
April 2, 1916 ~ July 15, 2003
Andy Popkie, 87, of Weirton, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the Weirton Medical Center. He was born April 2, 1916 in Adena, Ohio, the son of the late Anthony and Bernice Zarko Popkie. His wife Stella Ference Popkie, three brothers, Alfred, Leo and Seiford Popkie and one sister Clara Pelley also preceded him.
Andy was a former employee of Joe Ference Motor Sales in Weirton. He later worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Weirton, where he retired in 1977. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, American Legion Post 10, VFW Post 2716, DAV in Bellaire, Ohio and the Purple Heart Club of Weirton/Follansbee. Andy served in the Army during World War II at which time he was a recipient of the Purple Heart Award.
He is survived by his son Richard Popkie of Weirton; brother Norman Popkie of Yorkville, Ohio and sister Jane Kaffana of Dillonvale, Ohio.
Friends will be received Wednesday, 7 – 9PM and Thursday 2 – 4 and 7 – 9PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton where services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday. Interment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery in Weirton where military services will be conducted by the Weirton V.F.W. Post 2716 Firing Squad, the American Legion Post 10 Honor Guard and the Tri-State Marine Corps.
