Anntonette (Ann) Backel, 87 of Weirton died Wednesday January 30, 2002 at the D & D Quality Care Inc.,Weirton. She was born on July 23, 1914 in Scranton, PA, the daughter of the late Frank and Helen Merhel Zanieski. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Karal Backel on April 8, 1990 and her brother Stanley Zanieski on October 23, 1989. Ann owned and operated Backel’s Market on Weircrest in Weirton, before her retirement. She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers and the Rosary Society. Ann was also the financial secretary for the PNA lodge. She is survived by her two sons, John Backel and his wife Janet of Weirton and Robert Backel and his wife Donna of Gautier Mississippi; her sister Bernice Wolpert of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; her six grandchildren, Christopher Backel and his wife Roberta and Jason Backel and his wife Shannon all of Weirton, WV, Mike Backel and his wife Deanna of Columbus, Mississippi, Jennifer Wilkerson and her husband Greg of South Haven, Mississippi, Kimberly Dorsey and her husband Tommy, Christi Pitts and her husband Archie all of Pascagoula, Mississippi; her great grandchildren, Camden and Blake Backel, Ann Marie and Luke Dorsey, Landon Backel, Alexandra Backel and three more on their way. Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-9 PM Friday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV Funeral liturgy with mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday at the Sacred Heart Of Mary Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. D. Kent Durig will officiate.
