beth digregorio

Beth DiGregorio, a beloved educator and community advocate affectionately known as “Miss D.” to generations of students and colleagues, passed away July 16, 2025, at the age of 94 in her hometown of Weirton, West Virginia.

Born on June 30, 1931, at her family’s home in Weirton, Beth was the eldest of four children of the late Domenic and Lena Buracchio DiGregorio. A proud graduate of Weir High School, she embarked on a lifelong journey in education that touched thousands of lives.

After high school, she pursued higher education in California, earning her associate degree in arts from Compton Junior College. She later returned home to complete her Bachelor of Arts at West Liberty State College and her master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Beth dedicated an extraordinary 50 years of her life to teaching English at Weir High School, beginning in 1954. Beyond the classroom, she sponsored multiple student classes and served as advisor to the school newspaper and the yearbook, “The Weirite”. She also served as the Weir High Cheering Coach for many years, directed student plays and was a leader in curriculum development, serving as chairman of the Faculty Committee and secretary of the Curriculum Committee for Secondary Language Arts Teachers.

Her commitment to education extended far beyond her school. Beth was an active member of the Hancock County Education Association, the Classroom Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma, a national honorary society for women educators.

Beth’s passion for community service was equally impactful. She served on the Weirton Human Rights Commission and supported the Brooke Hancock Mental Health Society. She was the founder of the Forget-Me-Not Twig and a longtime member of St. Theresa’s Guild. She also served as president of the Hancock County Federation of Democratic Women’s Clubs and held various roles in the Junior Department of the Weirton Women’s Club. Her statewide influence included service as State Chair for Membership of the International Clubs Council and the Pan-American Scholarship Committee.

A devout Catholic, she was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, The Christian Mothers, the Adult Sodality of Queen of Peace, and was a dedicated supporter of Weirton Madonna High School. At Madonna, she taught and served as acting principal for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for public high school students.

Beth also gave generously of her time to the Weirton Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bernard “Buddy D.” DiGregorio; her sister and brother-in-law, Leanora “Babe” Olashuk and John “Gene” Olashuk; and her brother-in-law, Paul T. Duffy, Sr.

Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she shaped, the communities she strengthened, and the generations she inspired.

Beth is survived by her sister, Jeannie Duffy; her nieces and nephews, whom she treated as her own children with a fierce love for each of them; Paul Thomas (Melissa), Danny, and Terry (Brenda) Duffy; John (Jodi) and Bobby (Jill) Olashuk; Ryan (Leigh Ann DeLong), Buddy, and Joey DiGregorio; Donna (Ronnie Jones) Gialluco; Mary (Kevin) Davis; Tiffany (Scott) Bradley; and Diana (Skyler) Choplin. She took great pride in their accomplishments and tried to attend as many of their activities as possible. She also leaves behind 23 great-nieces and nephews and 5 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received on Sunday from 4 PM until 6 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday at Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Weirton.

Rev. Fr. Binu Sebastian will preside.

She will be laid to rest in the mausoleum at Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Weirton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church or to Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church.

Miss D’s family would like to thank the staff of the Weirton Geriatric Center for their excellent care they provided while she was a resident.

Rest in peace, Aunt Beth… No more tests to give, no more papers to grade.

  3. Candle Selection 1Miss D, you helped me to love language and how to diagram a sentence. Both gifts have blessed my life. Thank you. I’ll see you up there. Love, “Mary Susan”

  4. Candle Selection 2I extend my condolences to Miss D’s family. I fondly remember her as a teacher while I was in high school and also as colleague as a member of Weir High School’s faculty.

  5. Candle Selection 3Miss D,
Being part of Weir High Cheerleaders in the 1970s, I got to know you well. You taught me leadership, over-coming challenge, and success. Part of your teaching has carried with me all my life. Guess what! I’m teaching college students in Oregon. I never thought that would happen in my life. I’m so glad I got to see you at the Weirton Geriatrics Center when I visited my mom. God Bless You.

  6. Ms Diggy was one of the truly great educators to bless Weir High. She loved her work & had a way of connecting with her students. She was highly respected but those who crossed that line were chewed up & spit out with her quik wit & dynamo personality. She definitely made an impact on thousands of lives & I was blessed to be one of them.

  7. My condolences to her family and friends. She was a spitfire. I like those kind of people. May she rest in peace.

  8. She was amazing lady and all devotion to all. God you just got another teacher in heaven with you

  9. Candle Selection 8Cousin Beth always wanted to know all the details of how the kids were doing, which is I’m sure what made her a great educator:) I hope she is enjoying the big Italian party with family in heaven!

  10. I have many memories of “Miss D” through the years. She was my English literature teacher and rode on many band bus trips to away football games with her cheerleaders. As I became involved with the teacher’s association we often got to talk politics of WV. Always an enlightening conversation. She always stood up for teachers and touched many lives during her teaching career. May the happy memories of her life make you smile through this difficult time.

  11. To the Entire Duffy Family, My deepest sympathy may she rest in peace. I waited on her many times at the Elks for spaghetti dinner. She always wanted her tea really hot. She would send it back if it wasn’t. God Bless

  12. Many fond memories with the DiGregorio family. I used to help Beth grade papers at Nana’s dining room table sometimes and on occasion watch her instruct her cheerleaders. A very well educated lady.
