betty reed
Betty Virginia Reed, 95, of Colliers, WV, a devoted member of the Weirton First Church of the Nazarene, went home to be with Lord on Saturday, June 20, 2020. Betty was born on July 4, 1924, in Chester, WV, the youngest daughter born to Carl and Thelma Craft Wright. She grew up on Hudson Avenue in Weirton, WV, and graduated from Follansbee High School in 1941. She married her high school sweetheart in 1942, and they had their first child in 1943. Betty was a homemaker who read the Bible daily and had Jesus as the center of her family’s life. Over the years, she served in many ways at her church including being the pastor’s secretary, singing duets with her sister Alma, singing in the choir, and most notably, teaching Sunday School for over 60 years. She was known for her prayer life and would often get calls from people who said “Pray, Betty, Pray.” She loved Mexican food, had a great sense of humor, read the paper every day, and was insistent about looking her best. She was fiercely independent to the end. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Reed, and her two sisters, Marjorie Melott and Alma Blake. She will be remembered with love by her two sons, Larry Edward Reed and Ronald Allen Reed of Colliers, WV; her daughter, Karen and Gerard Gehrling of Uniontown, OH; her five grandchildren, Ronald, Kenneth, David and Joseph “J” Reed and Monta VanGilder; and her great-grandchildren, Sara, Raelynn, Logan, Kinsey, Tori, Leah, and Matthew Reed, Justin and Kendall VanGilder. The family would like to thank Chris Piccirillo and the staff at Golden Oaks, as well as Valley Hospice for taking exceptional care of her over the past 10 months. They played an important part in making her life comfortable and leaving this world at peace. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Tuesday at the Weirton First Church of the Nazarene 475 Colliers Way Weirton, WV. Additional visitation will be Wednesday at 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM at the Church. Interment will follow at Saint John’s Cemetery in Colliers, WV. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. In loving memory of Betty Reed, a woman of God, and a woman whose heart was made of pure gold. Thank you for the impact you left of my life!

  2. I feel beyond blessed to have had the opportunity to take care of Betty Reed at Golden Oaks Assisted Living. She was an absolute delight and spoke very highly of her family. She shared stories of her loved ones with me and it would put the biggest smile on her face. She loved Jesus, and it was evident. She always got along with others and it was rare to not catch her reading her bible! I will forever cherish the time that I had knowing her, and will keep all of the advice that she gave me in my heart and carry it with me through my life.

  3. John Louis Velegol, Jr. , of Colliers, would like to offer his deepest condolences to the Reed family on the loss of Betty. He remembers both Betty and Joe fondly.

  4. To: Larry, Ron, & Karen Words can adequately express my true feelings regarding your Mother’s passing. However, I know she is now at peace & celebrating with her other loved ones that have gone before her. She indeed was a very special lady & I have so many fond memories of your parents & I cherish the great times we had on the Reed Farm. God Bless, Be Safe, & know that there is one Big Reunion of those we knew & respected during our formative years! Jim Shirer

  5. So sorry to hear of your mother’s passing, Karen. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May the Lord bless and comfort all of you. Betsy McDowell
