d. durig

Father D. Kent Durig, a devoted priest of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston who faithfully served the Church and her people for nearly three decades, passed away on December 19, 2025.

Fr. Kent was born on March 23, 1956, in New Martinsville, West Virginia, one of three children born to the late Donald Eugene and JoAnn Simms Durig. From an early age, he felt a calling to serve God and His Church, a vocation that would guide his entire life.
He attended St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he completed his undergraduate and theological studies. Fr. Kent was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1993, by Bishop Bernard W. Schmitt at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Following his ordination, Fr. Kent’s priestly ministry touched many parishes throughout the Diocese. He served as associate pastor at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Weirton from 1993 to 1995. In 1995, he was priest in residence at St. Alphonsus, St. Ladislaus, and St. Mary parishes in Wheeling. From 1995 to 1998, he served as pastor of Annunciation of Our Lord Parish in Fort Ashby and St. Anthony Parish in Ridgeley.

In 1998, Fr. Kent returned to Weirton as pastor of Sacred Heart of Mary Parish, where he served until 2010. During his tenure, he led a significant renovation and beautification of the church, leaving a lasting legacy for the parish community. From 2010 to 2019, he served as pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Stonewood, where he once again guided a renovation and beautification project, reflecting his deep reverence for sacred spaces.

Later in his ministry, Fr. Kent served as priest in residence at the Clara Welty Apartments LC in Wheeling for over a year. He retired from active ministry in 2021, having faithfully answered God’s call with dedication, humility, and pastoral care.
Fr. Kent was preceded in death by his parents, and his nephew C. Michael Hickman.

He will be remembered with love by his brother, Todd Durig of New Martinsville, West Virginia; his sister, Nanette Raber and her husband, Thomas, also of New Martinsville; niece, Carrie (Thomas “T.J.” ) Haught; step-niece, Stephanie Corathers; his good friend of twenty years, Joe Keaton , and his aunt who helped care for him through the years, Michelle Mason along with several great nieces and nephews, brother priests, and countless faithful whose lives he touched.

Kent’s body will take place at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Weirton at 4:00 p.m., followed by visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will immediately follow, with the Very Reverend Donald X. Guestbook

  1. Candle Selection 8I became friends with Kent 50 years ago. We went on family vacations, to horse shows and loved hanging at the farm or a good restaurant. We both always loved good food. I was honored to be there as a sponsor and God Father when Kent joined the Catholic Church as an adult and again as a friend at his ordination into the priesthood; and he has been teaching me about my religion and inspiring my faith ever since. We had many conversations about God, faith, family and the passing of our parents. I now find comfort knowing he is with them. I’ll miss you my dear friend and look forward to seeing you again some day.

  2. Candle Selection 6We are sad to learn that Father Kent has faithfully answered God’s Call Home already, however, we also faithfully understand that he did so in God’s Good Time. We appreciate that Father Kent passed through our lives and admired his devotion to the Lord and his dedication to his calling. He left the churches where he was assigned stronger and more vibrant than they were when he arrived. Rest well good and faithful servant in God’s Good Grace and Unfathomable Eternal Love.

  3. Candle Selection 2Fr Kent and I went to seminary together and remained steadfast friends even though we lived in separate states. I visited him, for the most part, at each parish he ministered (some several times). I met his family and many of his friends and shared two to three Thanksgiving weekends with them since my home was too far to travel to during the short break. I saw first-hand how he loved the people of every parish he served, and how they loved him in return. Kent was a great storyteller and felt the pains and joys of his parishioner’s lives. He was filled with love for others and graciously accepted their love back. He had a wonderful family who loved each other very much and supported him in his faith journey. I just watched virtually Kent’s mass of the ressurection at the WV Cathedral, and it was beautiful even though very sad on this side of living. Kent, we believe in our Christian faith, is basking in the love and joy of God. God bless Kent until we see him again in Heaven where we will all bask in the love and joy of our Loving God.
